In New Mexico state, nursing standards of practice are designed to give a general understanding of all duties expected of a registered nurse without regard to role, specialty, or competency. This scope and standards of practice are authoritative statements on how the professional nurse should practice. They aren’t prescriptive; they don’t state exactly how to perform specific job tasks or functions.

Nursing standards of practice changes constantly and it is important for nurses to keep themselves up to date and be competent. As part of standard of practice on education, all heath care professionals must participate in training courses on infection prevention and control after covid-19 outbreak (Huang et al., 2020).

The process for developing theses standards uses who? And this will include RNs, APRNs, etc., what? Nursing, which is the protection and promotion of health and abilities and prevention of illness and injuries, where? Which will be wherever patient care is needed, and why? To accomplish a most assured patient care outcome.

Nursing standards of practice are determined by different entities like the state’s Nurse Practice

Act (NPA) through the board of nursing. As the state is responsible to protect the public, New Mexico state board of nursing is charged with ensuring nurses practice within defined laws of practice. Besides, the legislation and New Mexico’s board of nursing, there are American Nurses Association (ANA) which formulates the guidelines for the nurses, fostering high standards of nursing practice. The ANA is the most influential organization in nursing. All nurses, facilities, and other organizations look to the ANA for guidance in the standards of care and practice for all registered nurses. There are also a Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE), and centers for medicine which set standards for healthcare care.

In New Mexico state, having regulations and standards across all nursing specialties including acute care section where I work has greatly influenced nursing process positively and has helped improve outcomes of care, treatments and patient safety. It has influenced registered nurses to provide care with great sense of responsibility in their scope and capacity, and not to act in a manner that may jeopardize patient health or beyond their level of competency. An advantage of this nursing standard of practice approach is greater clarity it offers to expectation of practice (Giddens et al., 2022).
