Written Assignment 1: Managers Tour
Since transportation promotes economic and social development, the aviation industry affects the commerce and tourism sectors. Just like other forms of transport, airports connect states and regions, thus, they facilitate global connections. However, compensation practices, work rules, and capital determine an airport’s operational efficiency (AirNav, 2022). For this reason, structural adjustments are inevitable as airlines strive to maintain a competitive edge since the deregulation declaration. Even though the U.S. government regulates air transport, the administrative fiat strategy triggers airport space and land slot controversies. The paper presents Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF) background history, benefits, and future perspectives.
Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport was established in 1949. The facility is situated in Newport News and is managed by the Peninsula Airport Commission (Airport-Data, 2022). The designated abbreviation for the airport is PHF and it enhances commercial activities in the cities of Hampton and Newport News. However, the enactment of the deregulation law in 1978 affected PHF operations and management strategy (Airport-Data, 2022). For instance, the directive compelled Newport News /Williamsburg International Airport to terminate jet passenger services, thus, it incurred financial losses. Likewise, another setback hit the airport in 2012 as AirTran, its largest carrier, ceased operations as a result of the merger (AirNav, 2022). Despite the competitive forces, the PHF management strategy focuses on integrity and customer satisfaction. Therefore, the facility provides reliable, and efficient air services at affordable rates.
Air transport facilitates national and regional transportation networks. Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport supports commercial passenger services as it connects Virginia to other states and regions. Even though Virginia has 66 airports, PHF links the densely populated areas stretching from Hampton Roads to Northern Virginia (AirNav, 2022). As a result, it is a catchment area for customers who prefer short-distance and affordable flights. Regionally, Delta and American Airlines carriers link the airport to Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Charlotte (Airport-Data, 2022). For this reason, it promotes seamless transportation of people and cargo in the region. The beach, Premium Outlets, Busch Gardens, and Kingsmill Resort are some of the popular amenities individuals access through Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (Airport-Data, 2022). However, PHF operations incorporate the Transport Security Administration (TSA) regulations that safeguard airport works and customers. Despite offering pocket-friendly services, the airport encounters market pressure from competitors such as Richmond and Norfolk International Airport. Overall, PHF transportation services connect local, regional, and international markets.
Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport attracts economic benefits in the region. Firstly, it is an economic generator as it provides employment opportunities to airline employees including passenger services personnel and security officers (Airport-Data, 2022). The U.S. government also generates revenues in the facility through taxes. Since the airport links Virginia to other regions, it enables incomes generation through transportation of locally manufactured goods to the international markets. Secondly, PHF boosts regional tourism. The airport facilitates access to entertainment joints and recreational amenities including Kingsmill Resort, Busch Gardens, and Premium Outlets (AirNav, 2022). For that reason, it stimulates cross-cultural interactions and income generation in the hospitality industry. Thirdly, Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport enhances regional aviation practices. For example, it allows swift delivery of humanitarian aid and emergency relief in the region (AirNav, 2022). Besides, it promotes regional security through the transportation of law enforcement personnel and medical teams. Therefore, PHF supports economic development and regional integration.
The Peninsula Airport Commission owns and manages the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport. Fundamentally, the commission comprises six commissioners who regulate airport operations (Airport-Data, 2022). However, PHF administrative hierarchy is headed by the airport manager, a position currently held by Michael Giardino (AirNav, 2022). The second in the chain of command is the assistant airport director who oversees management functions as depicted in the airport’s policy. The third level of the administrative protocol encompasses departmental managers in charge of corporate affairs, safety, human resource, operations, finance, and operations (Airport-Data, 2022). Moreover, the fourth and fifth administrative level entails the ground crew and flight crew respectively. The airport offers 24/7 customer services from Monday to Monday. The operations are categorized into information management, airside, landside, and invoicing and billing. Overall, the airport management structure harmonizes operations to ensure efficient service delivery in the designated departments.
Since the aviation industry is highly competitive, PHF management collaborates with other stakeholders to implement the facility’s development plan. In this case, the airport administration strives to provide customer-centric services to achieve its development objectives. For instance, the facility adopted the 2016/2027 development plan to streamline its operations (Scripps Media, 2022). The upgrade program entails an injection of $78 million to improve the airport’s infrastructure such as upgrading luggage carousels, improving jet bridges, and renovating restrooms (Scripps Media, 2022). Besides, the project entails enhancing the exterior design, parking lots, and improving customer service systems in the facility. Therefore, the main objective of the development plan is to enhance PHF operations efficiency and improve revenue generation.
Overall, Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport facilitates commercial airline services in Virginia. The airport links the local cities to regional and international markets. However, the Deregulation Act affected PHF operations and profitability. Since development challenges are inevitable, PHF stakeholders should embrace infrastructure development and marketing to improve customer satisfaction and effectiveness.
