The fact that the healthcare industry today is information-intensive communicates the need to incorporate health informatics in meeting the patient’s health needs. Health informatics ensure the delivery of safe and quality care (Kleib et al., 2016). The most compelling topics related to informatics that I learned in this course include the safety and security of patients’ health information as stipulated in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, technology adoption in the healthcare settings as well as decision modeling and natural language processing.
Participating in discussions enabled me to acquire knowledge on different things such as the importance of having accessible websites for the patients to improve their knowledge on specific health conditions. The informatics course has also enabled me to improve my research skills while making sure that I use credible and verified websites. The use of informatics among nursing students during their clinical rotations and practicum is likely to improve their ability and skills in the use of health information technology. It is vital to acknowledge that when nursing students join the workforce, they are likely to go through informatics-related training. Therefore, incorporating topics on informatics in the curriculum is likely to improve their job readiness and ability to provide safe and quality care.
This course is likely to make me a more responsible and accountable nurse in my future nursing practice. For example, as I handle patient information, I will more likely put into consideration the provisions of the HIPAA Act related to patients’ information privacy and security against fraud and theft. I will therefore be a mentor to my peers while at the same time providing quality and safe care to patients.
