Within the Discussion Board area, write 250 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates.
You are required to use 1 scholarly resource in addition to your textbook. Be substantive and clear and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Patricia Benner\’s nursing theory uses the Dreyfus model to describe the stages through which skill acquisition is attained. The five stages are: (1) novice, (2) advanced beginner, (3) competent, (4) proficient, and (5) expert. Reflect on these stages, and respond to the following directions and questions:

Describe your progression through these stages to the point at which you believe you are at this time.
Give examples of your nurse practice at each stage.
At what point did you feel you mastered one stage and moved on to the next stage?

Unit 1 DB 2: Patricia Benner’s nursing theory

Completing the required training to become part of the nursing profession and becoming a nursing expert are completely different stages of professional development. In her nursing theory, Patricia Benner indicates that skill acquisition and professional competence occur in five stages namely: novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, and expert. I have progressed through these stages and I can proudly state that I am currently at the ‘proficient stage’.

It has taken me several years to transition from ‘novice’ to ‘proficient’. I was at the ‘novice’ stage when I first started to train as a nurse. At this stage, I learned the roles of a nurse and the specific objectives of nursing practice. I felt that I had mastered the requirements of the ‘novice’ phase when I had mastered the fundamental concepts of nursing and the standards that govern nursing practice (Paans et al., 2017). From the ‘novice’ stage, I transitioned to the ‘advanced beginner’ stage where I recognized key facts related to nursing. For example, I learned issues related to evidence-based practice and how to apply research evidence to inform nursing practice (Paans et al., 2017). I felt that I had mastered this stage when I could comfortably locate evidence to inform clinical decisions when I was working as an operating room nurse. I then moved to the ‘competence’ stage where I could practice as an operating room nurse with minimum supervision. I felt that I was ready to move to the next stage when I was able to recognize variations in situational elements and choose appropriate nursing interventions to address those situations (Paans et al., 2017). I believe that I am currently at the ‘proficient’ stage. This is evidenced by my ability to apply critical thinking when faced with complex issues. My critical thinking abilities have a great influence on the quality of care that I offer to patients (Rubenfeld, 2014). For example, I am able to implement nursing interventions based on an intuitive understanding of patients’ needs.

I am confident that I will soon transition to the ‘expert’ stage of skill acquisition. According to Benner et al. (2009), an ‘expert’ nurse combines caring, clinical, judgment, and ethics knowledge to address specific elements of nursing. Through educational advancement, I will be able to acquire skills that will enable me to become an expert operating room nurse.
