Topic 8, Discussion Question 1
Variables are usually given a special name that is only applied to experimental investigations. Variables are either called independent or dependent variables. For example, the independent variable is the one that the experimenter manipulates or changes and has a direct effect on the dependent variable (Cheng et al., 2019). In this handwashing and hygiene project, the independent variables include staff education and handwashing reinforcement (clinical supervision, disciplinary actions).
On the other hand, the dependent variables are those that are being tested and measured in an experiment. In this handwashing experiment, the dependent variables include staff knowledge of handwashing and adherence to handwashing protocols (frequency and proper handwashing procedure) (Cheng et al., 2019). Therefore, staff education and clinical supervision or handwashing reinforcement are expected to result in improved staff knowledge regarding handwashing and hygiene. It is also expected to result in improved adherence to handwashing protocols (Cheng et al., 2019). These protocols include frequency of handwashing and procedure of proper handwashing.
Staff education will be provided as described in the project summary. After staff education, reinforcement or clinical supervision will follow. The results will focus on adherence to handwashing protocols, which include after and before attending to every patient, as well as following the handwashing procedure (Cheng et al., 2019). The researcher will also measure staff knowledge regarding handwashing and hygiene.
