Response to Short Questions

Define negotiation as it applies to patient education

Negotiation in patient education is whereby health care professionals try to reach a consensus about a specific issue. During patient education, the health worker and the patient share ideas while comparing notes (Stewart, 2019). The patient has preferences while the health professionals try to follow medical guidelines. Both need to be heard by either side and eventually, they try to find a common or fairground.

Explain how the change in the patient\’s status through the years has affected patient education

Patient education is significantly defined by the age of the individual. When dealing with children, patient education is administered to parents. As one becomes an adult, they can now receive direct advice from the care providers (Stewart, 2019). As people become older and older, their brains undergo degeneration affecting memory and their capacity to make rational decisions, hence, family members must be present during patient education.

List the pros and cons of negotiation

Negotiation has several advantages. For instance, it promotes personalized support to the patient. Negotiation encourages understanding of the patient’s needs. It also provides an opportunity for both parties to right the right questions and receive instant feedback (Stewart, 2019). One major con is that misunderstanding between the patient and the care provider is likely to occur due to poor communication skills.

Describe the general conditions that would be included in a patient contract

The general conditions to include in a patient contract include attendance, whereby the patient presents themselves during the appointment. Confidentiality is part of the contract to ensure the security of personal information (Stewart, 2019). Also, the customer must agree to cooperate positively with the staff to avoid unfair treatment of one another.

Discuss old age and the baby boomer

Baby boomers are individuals born after the end of world war II. These people are currently above 55 years. They present the larger percentage of America’s old generation (Falch-Eriksen et al., 2022). They are deteriorating fast and may overwhelm the health care sector if no proper measures are taken.

List several generational, religious, and cultural differences between the 30-year-old health care professional and the elderly patient

Unlike the older patient, the 30-year-old professional does not follow strictly cultural norms. The 30-year-old relies on technology for socialization with diversified people while the older person maintains family bonds (Falch-Eriksen et al., 2022). While the older patient may be prayerful and believes in miraculous healing, the 30-year-old believes in evidence-based medical care to heal.

Explain some of the barriers to patient education of the elderly and discuss their special needs

Barriers to patient education in the older population reduced attention and an already set mindset. Some elderly people do not feel good being educated by young people. Their special needs include diet, medications, and financial assistance (Stewart, 2019). These needs may change from one person to another.

List ways to best approach patient education of the elderly

  • Maintain a positive attitude to the client
  • Be culturally sensitive during the session
  • Be ready to listen without interrupting the patient
  • Maintain compassion, respect, and humility throughout the session.

Discuss some cultural and religious beliefs about death that you have encountered

Some people believe that death is temporary, therefore, the resurrection will happen at one point. In Christianity, everyone will be resurrected when Jesus returns and those who died in Christ will live again forever and ever (Ziebertz & Zaccaria, 2019).  Some believe that through death one becomes part of God. Most religions have this belief.

Explain why it is important to discuss death and dying with the elderly patient and what the impact is on all involved

Discussions about death allow elderly persons to understand the concept of the continuum of life. They get to understand that life comprises stages and their consequences on health. They will perceive death as a stage rather than a bad lack (Ziebertz & Zaccaria, 2019). Also, they will engage in positive lifestyle changes to improve their experience as they approach death.

Explain how to teach a patient with a life-threatening condition

Educating patients with a life-threatening condition is important to help them understand their health. It is important to get informed consent before beginning. The care provider should inform the patient about the importance of therapy, its advantages, and possible side effects (Stewart, 2019). Medication adherence must be covered in the education. Educate the patient about a healthy lifestyle. It is important to encourage the patients and assure them of hope all the time.
