Part 1: Research Analysis

Topic of Interest: Pressure ulcer prevention
Research Article: Include full citation in APA format, as well as link or search details (such as DOI) Roberts, S., McInnes, E., Wallis, M., Bucknall, T., Banks, M. & Chaboyer, W. (2016). Nurses’ perceptions of a pressure ulcer prevention care bundle: a qualitative descriptive study. BMC Nursing, 15(64), 1-10. https://doi.org/10.1186/s12912-016-0188-9.
Professional Practice Use:

One or more professional practice uses of the theories/concepts presented in the article

The main concept explored in the article is pressure ulcer prevention using a care bundle. The evidence documented in the article can be used in professional practice by supporting the implementation of a pressure ulcer prevention care bundle (PUPCB) that encourages patient participation in the care process so prevent pressure ulcers and promote patient safety.

The theory that has been presented in the article is the Normalisation Process Theory. The theory can be used in professional practice to guide the implementation of a patient safety intervention such as the PUPCB. The theory would guide the adopters to maintain coherence, cognitive participation, collective action, and reflexive monitoring to ensure successful implementation.

Strengths of the Research Limitations of the Research Relevancy to Topic of Interest Notes
-The use of a purposive sampling maximizes variation thereby enhancing the generalizability of study findings.

-A small sample size of 18 nurses from four healthcare facilities makes it difficult to represent any different views regarding participants’ opinions in the findings. This is likely to affect the generalizability of study findings. The article is relevant in that it promotes patient-centered care by encouraging the involvement of patients in the implementation of a pressure ulcer prevention care bundle. The evidence can be applied to promote patient safety in acute healthcare settings. Like nurses, patients have a role to play in preventing pressure ulcers to address high incidences that are witnessed across acute healthcare settings. Evidence contained in the article emphasizes the need to involve patients in the implementation of a PUPCB to promote patient safety.
-Ensuring saturation during data collection and the inclusion of both private and public healthcare institutions in the study enhanced the applicability of findings to similar settings.

-The fact that the study focused on one intervention: PUPCB ensured the collection of specific evidence that can guide healthcare professionals to improve patient care.

-By focusing on a specific patient care issue, the researchers have been able to collect evidence that can be applied to guide the implementation of multi-component pressure ulcer prevention strategies.

Justification

I would recommend the article to inform professional practice. The article is empirical research in which the researchers have collected data directly from participants. Therefore, the documented evidence is based on primary findings from healthcare settings and healthcare professionals who are directly involved in the management of pressure ulcers. In this respect, professionals should use this evidence with confidence to inform clinical practice with patients at risk of developing pressure ulcers.

Part 2: Reflection and Narrative

My approach to identifying peer reviewed research entails using keywords to search nursing databases. The approach that I have used to analyze the article involves the use of a research analysis matrix to identify the strengths, weaknesses, and relevance of the article to the topic of interest (Polit & Beck, 2017; Gray et al., 2017). The two strategies that I found to be effective and that I would use to search peer-reviewed journals include; searching databases using phrases with the concept of interest and phrases with the expected outcomes of the intervention. One resource that I intend to use in the future to find peer-reviewed research is Google Scholar.
