Introduction
Leadership is important in every organization or industry to influence and maximize the efforts of others toward the achievement of a common goal. The main role of nursing leaders is to serve as role models to team members and the entire healthcare professionals (Balan & Vreja, 2019). I am a follower because I contribute success to my leaders at the workplace. I am a part of a team of followers who have shown the ability and authority to accomplish certain tasks through dedication and passion. I became a follower through the desire to learn and enthusiasm to do the right thing and cooperate with others (McKimm & Vogan, 2020). I am also a leader in other areas and achieve roles by providing clear objectives, regular and meaningful feedback, and necessary resources to the work. Learning through various ways has made me understand that leadership involves inclusivity and making the toughest decisions, as long as it is the right way even if some people are against it. I have grown in leadership confidence because I can guide people and make decisions when there are divided opinions (Balan & Vreja, 2019). This paper is a reflective essay of what was covered the entire semester.
Define leadership and followership and discuss their importance in general
According to Balan & Vreja (2019), the definition of leadership is complex; however, some theories have tried to create a meaning of what this word may mean. Based on several theories (the Great Man theory, the trait theory, the charismatic leadership theory, the psychoanalytic theory, and others) leadership can be defined as the ability to influence, guide, and lead a group of people using particular skills, traits, or values. All the theories point at leaders as individuals with higher rank and special influence on others. On the other hand, followership can be defined as the way people interact and respond to their leaders and others (McKimm & Vogan, 2020). These two concepts are important because they are at the center of every organization. Both leaders and followers are interdependent to achieve organizational objectives. Both followership and leadership are my strengths because I have experience and understanding of both situations.
Analysis of your leadership/followership styles throughout the course as evidenced by your journal and appendices
This leadership course has been very educative throughout the semester. My leadership style changed over time during the entire learning process. I began to look at leadership as a responsibility rather than just a position. I began to understand that leadership is about caring for other people rather than perceiving them as inferior. Due to the leadership style and skills I possess, I did not face any difficulty engaging everyone in the group, except for one student who never participated. I reached out to her separately to engage her to the best of my ability for us to complete the group work collectively. Leadership style and skills are very crucial in realizing the success of the group.
In the last 9 weeks, I try my best to bring a positive change to my students. This is the reason I reached out to that one student. I believe in transformation because that is what leadership should do (Demirtas, 2020). For that reason, I believe to possess a transformational leadership style because I tend to focus on developing my followers while considering their needs. One important I learned in class is the power of collaboration at work. The concept of collaboration and interpersonal relations stood out in the class discussion. In addition, what I learned about myself as a leader is that I tend to focus a lot on employee development, including their morality, skills, and motivation. According to Al Khajeh (2018), transformational leadership happens when the leader elevates the interest of the employees. A transformational leader encourages followers to look beyond self-interest.
Consider and write about 2 strengths (trait/characteristic/behavior) that you identified in yourself. Provide an example that illustrates one strength from your nursing praxis and another strength found in all of your weekly reflections found in your appendix.
The two strengths that I am identified with include advocacy and inclusivity. Beginning with advocacy is defined as the process of taking an action to support a course (Uhl-Bien et al., 2020). For instance, at the workplace, I took an action to support the need for making the patients as mobile as possible, through this, I showed the character of advocacy. According to Boamah (2018), advocates are often incorporated into leadership positions as the coordinators of coalitions or organizations due to their strategic thinking and good communication skills. Therefore, advocacy is a leadership characteristic that makes individuals distinguished. Sometimes advocates do not have any background in the basics of management, interpersonal communication, and organizational decision-making (Boamah, 2018). Therefore, making time for leaders to develop a full range of capacities is one important rule not to be overlooked.
Uhl-Bien et al. (2020) state that advocacy is a process (like leadership) and not a title. Advocacy entails continuous reflection and adaptation to achieve particular community goals. Advocacy is mainly associated with social justice. A good example is a scenario where patients’ mobility is advocated for to ensure patients are being mobilized as recommended. This is a level of social justice for that particular group of people. My leadership for advocacy includes giving direction to certain actions as well as being able to recognize an opportunity to change directions if need be (Boamah, 2018). I also practice advocacy by communicating plans and ideas in a manner that persuades, inspires, and informs.
The second strength or behavior is reflected in the entire weekly reflections. Inclusivity is my leadership character reflected in all the weekly reflections. For instance, appendix D shows how I included all the group members in a discussion without any form of discrimination or attitude. As a group leader, it is important to treat everyone fairly and equally to enhance the successful running of the group. Diversity among people has become an area of concern. To bridge the diversity gaps in every setting, inclusivity has been the best solution (LeBlanc et al., 2020). To enhance the character of inclusivity in nurses, the curriculum has been designed to prepare graduates to effectively meet the needs of a diverse patient population.
LeBlanc et al. (2020) stated further that diversity is encouraged in discussions, communication skills training, case studies, classrooms, and other settings. Inclusivity is essential in ensuring that diversity does not become a discriminatory factor in various places. It is important to educate nursing students on the skills, tools, and knowledge to provide inclusive care (Moorley & West, 2022). Certain traits have enabled me to achieve inclusivity as a leader, such as humility, awareness of bias, curiosity about others, and visible commitment. Cultural intelligence and effective collaboration. I can articulate an authentic commitment to diversity and make diversity inclusion a personal priority. In addition, humility helps leaders to be modest regarding their capabilities and create space for other people to contribute (Bourke & Titus, 2020). Therefore, the two strengths above have contributed to my leadership success.
Two areas in need of improvement (trait/characteristic/behavior) were identified and an example was provided to illustrate this (example for area 1 from nursing praxis and example for area 2 in all of your weekly reflections and reference to appendices).
The two areas that need improvement include leadership confidence, and being organized in leading a group of people. I need to work on my ability to have confidence in being a leader so that I can trust my ability to lead correctly (Gunel, 2021). For example, I tried to doubt my leadership ability at the workplace when I tried to propose an issue, I faced opposition from members of the group, and I felt embarrassed. I felt shy to share my ideas because I thought they could face opposition. However, I later realized that leadership is about inclusivity and collaboration.
Leadership confidence reflects the self-esteem of a leader. According to Gunel (2021), self-esteem is one of the basic elements that one should have to achieve a happy life and gain a sense of meaning in their life. Self-confidence (also self-esteem) is the feeling of worthiness and competence. It also involves how one manages emotions, interacts with the environment, and has a sense of self-acceptance (Gunel, 2021). I realized that I am weak in this particular area (leadership confidence) during the discussion. I used the idea of Gunel (2021) to assess my leadership confidence. The authors stated that leaders with low self-esteem (or with low leadership confidence) have inconsistent and mixed self-perception; they tend to underestimate their leadership abilities and are not confident. I realized I tend to have a mixed conception of my leadership ability. Gunel (2021) states further that leadership confidence is associated with success. Therefore, I thought it wise to improve my leadership confidence and self-esteem to achieve success and to improve my self-perception from people around me.
The second trait I need to improve is the aspect of being an organized leader, especially when leading my team. Being organized is one of the important yet overlooked traits a leader should have (Porteous, 2022). During the online weeks, I realized that I was lacking some important leadership elements that are related to being an organized leader. Though not so much, I realized I needed to improve my time management with I thought was a problem due to a lack of being sufficiently organized. Sometimes jobs could elapse because of a lack of proper time management. In addition, it appeared to me that planning was an issue. All these issues (time management, planning, timely completion of tasks) can be improved by being organized. According to Porteous (2022), the inability to be organized can lead to chaos and eventually an increase in stress levels. I would have improved my organization skills to improve the online week’s experience. I would do the same in the future to improve group engagement. However, I did not sense disengagement or disinterest when I was a leader because I was not that bad off. I did not fail in my responsibility but felt I needed to work on the two areas to enhance my leadership.
Two goals to address the areas in need of development (should align with those presented in section 5).
To improve these leadership areas mentioned in the previous section, I must take proper actions and commit to them until I achieve my objectives. One of the goals that I would go by to address these areas of improvement include taking a leadership course to enhance my confidence and organization skills. Another goal is to implement find a mentor who has a similar leadership style (transformational) to help me improve the two areas. According to Tingle et al. (2019), leadership development programs and courses can help one develop competent skills. The authors carried out a study to describe some of the strategies education leaders could utilize to improve their effectiveness as school leaders. The study findings included mentor support as an effective strategy to acquire more effective leadership qualifications (Tingle et al., 2019). Participants reported that the support they received from their mentors influenced their development as leaders.
Lee et al. (2020) reaffirm the importance of mentorship by stating that the type of mentoring and the individualized experiences within each mentoring relationship uniquely impact particular leadership development outcomes, such as enhanced self-efficacy. This article already points out the possibility of mentorship to improve leadership confidence or self-esteem. Lee et al. (2020) stated that peer mentoring could help develop leaders’ generativity and Psychological Capital. The psychological aspect is important because it has the most impact on one’s confidence to lead. Based on the information provided above, I have a feeling that getting a mentor is a viable goal to help me address leadership issues.
The second goal is to register for a leadership course, which I believe can be more productive. A leadership course offers curricular training that equips learners with almost all the skills they need to become successful leaders. Leadership courses help students in gaining skills in many areas such as communication skills, critical thinking skills, organization skills, interpersonal skills, self-esteem, and others (Goodwin University, 2022). Taking leadership courses provide learners with an opportunity to sit in class and acquire these skills. The findings of 14 indicated that students gained important leadership skills after attending classes.
The curricular courses introduce students to leadership theories, allowing them to understand themselves and gain awareness of their leadership styles. Through these courses, I will be exposed to several credible resources from the school library (Goodwin University, 2022). Furthermore, I will access even more resources from online resources to allow me to improve my leadership ability. Therefore, I feel that the two goals (registering for a course and finding a mentor) are effective in helping me achieve leadership confidence and improve my organizational skills.
Leadership and followership responsibility in nursing
Leadership and followership are both important responsibilities in nursing practice. I feel confident to bring the concepts of leadership and followership to my organization. These concepts are very necessary for a healthcare organization because each has a role to play in organizational success (McKimm & Vogan, 2020). Nurse leaders influence and guide others to improve care delivery and patient outcomes. Without leaders, nurses may not work as needed because of a lack of guidance. Nurse supervisors are in the category of leaders and they have the responsibility of overseeing operations in their jurisdictions to ensure everything is okay (Novikov, 2016). Leaders are advocates and representatives of the whole community during challenging situations. Leaders motivate followers and lead by role models to improve workflow. Additionally, leaders inform followers of the organizational goals and entice them towards achieving the same.
Followership is also necessary because they are the ones doing the real work. Followers collaborate with leaders to improve performance and achieve organizational objectives. For example, exemplary followers are often willing to challenge leaders by providing alternative solutions. These followers proactively support the organizational goals and leaders’ decisions that are in line with their beliefs (Novikov, 2016). Therefore, such a style of followership can be beneficial to the organization. Fortunately enough, my organizational leadership supports both leadership and followership concepts in various ways. Apathy is a big hindrance to leadership and followership. Apathy has negative implications for the adoption of these concepts hence, should be avoided at all costs.
Conclusion
I have learned that inclusivity and advocacy are two of the many strengths I have in terms of leadership traits. I have also learned that am close to a transformational leader because I tend to focus on the development and growth of others. My greatest challenge as a leader might be the ability to show leadership confidence, which I will be working on to ensure I execute my duties effectively. In addition, I believe there is resentment towards leaders sometimes. Some followers might treat their leaders unfairly, especially when they hold contrary opinions. In the next 3 to 5 years, I want to be a great leader, who is a mentor and a role model to my juniors. I should be perfect in terms of leadership confidence or organization skills; I must strengthen these skills. I believe that a novice nurse graduate can be a great leader because leadership skills are learned. What frightens me about leadership is making tough decisions and what excites me is becoming a role model to many followers.

Activity #1: Reflect on your in-class contribution
Weekly topic: Course Introduction and Overview of Leadership & Innovation
Summary of Leadership/Followership contribution to group discussion (1-2 sentences):
During this session. I have been able to associate an image with what leadership and followership mean to me. The picture is of a group of people holding hands with one another. To me it signifies collaboration with one another and being able to work collectively as a team to reach optimal outcomes. It signified leading by example, whilst including the teams input collectively. Followership meaning putting trust in one another to achieve the leader’s vision or accomplish organizational goals. I have taken on the role of both a leader as well as a follower in nursing. I have been a leader as a clinical extern where I have had to orientate a new extern to the unit, allowed to follow my lead by following the tasks I was completing. Prior to doing so I would ask them what skills they needed more exposure to and which skills they felt the most comfortable in. During this time, I always ensured that they were understanding and assisted them with what their learning needs were. I have been able to chieve the followership role in many placements in nursing, as I have been able to learn from nurses, and clinical instructors that I was placed with and apply the skills they have taught me.
Activity #2: Set up group work activities for the term
Select the chapters each student(s) will take leadership on during online asynchronous weeks, how you will communicate in Canvas and what you expect for group members contributions/communication.

Summary of Leadership/Followership contribution (1-2 sentences):
This week I was a follower, I was able to follow Lilly ideas and implement it as a group. We were able to devote the online work each week to one person to take on the role of a leader. I have been able to follow this weeks leaders idea. We collectively decided to communicate via What’s App and complete the assigned readings on a word document. I was then responsible for chapter 2, and I was able to finish it prior to the deadline that Lilly had set out for the group.

Chapter Summary
On Canvas
In the case studies posted for this week, I found Case Study 3 interesting. I was wondering if any of you have had a similar experience to what Michael had in the case study. This could be any negative experience from a colleague at work or clinical placement. If you did have a similar experience what did you do about it, and how did it make you feel? Have you learned anything from this experience?
Joan and Michael are staff nurses on the same unit. Michael is a new graduate, and Joan has been
working there for about 10 years. You have observed while in placement that Joan is very
condescending toward Michael, and she engages in incivility and bullying behaviours towards
Michael in front of patients and in the hallway.
In the past I have experienced a similar situation as Joan being a new extern on a medical unit with staff. I have had limited hospital experience given the pandemic and it was my first time being on an acute unit. During orientation of the job, I was still adjusting to the routine on the unit as well as understanding my scope of practice as an extern. A staff member had become frustrated, about me not being able to saline lock an IV on a patient, despite it being beyond my scope of practice as an extern. She proceeded to complain to other staff saying that us externs don’t know what we are doing. Since then, during each interaction with externs she always had animosity towards them. This situation made me feel singled out, uncomfortable, and made it difficult to learn as it felt like I was completing tasks incorrectly despite it not being correct. I was able to discuss my concerns with a few of the nurse that I trusted as it was important for me to be in an environment where I felt comfortable enough to learn and make mistakes and not get discredited for it. My coworkers were able to reassure me, as well as talk to the nurse who continued to the nurse about my concerns as well as others concerns. Since then, she apologized and has approached us in a respectful matter. After the situation, I learned the importance of communication in a team dynamic as it affects how the team cooperates, coordinates as well as makes decisions. It has demonstrated how the skills, attitudes and personality of individuals combine with the teams’ dynamics to influence the teams overall performance.

Appendix C: Week #3 Personal journal (Week 3 In-class)
Weekly Topic: Caring Leadership and Followership Theory, Leadership outcomes, Leadership responsibilities
Activity #1: Reflect on your in-class contribution
Summary of Leadership/Followership contribution (1-2 sentences):
This week we learned about Watsons Theory of Human Caring Applied to Nurse Leaders and Nurse Managers. I have had several moments where the nurses that I have worked with have demonstrated caritive factor 4 of developing a helping- trusting relationship that consisted of trust, honesty and respect. They have been able to lead and guide me to where I have been able to follow their role and skills in caring for the patients. During these moments shared with the staff, I have always been able to apply it to my own patients and reflect on the areas that I require improvement.
Appendix D: Personal journal/group work (Week 4 Online)
Weekly topic: Leading for self-care plan and creative work Read Chapter 29
Activity #1: Reflect on how you enacted leadership/followership in this online week with your group.
Summary of Leadership/Followership individual work and contribution to group discussion (1-2 sentences):
This week I was the team leader of the group. This week we had the opportunity to be creative. Prior to beginning the assignment, I asked the group what their preferences were and inquired if they wanted to create their own separate responses in relation to emotional, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual connection. They chose to pick one each, so I instructed them to find an image or a collection of images, that represent self-care pertaining to their chosen question. In the end I was able to formulate a small circle that combined all their responses and images into one. I followed up by creating a discussion post. In this post I asked them when they were able to apply any of the questions asked for the group assignment to practice and to provide an example with it. I then took on the role of completing the chapter 29 summary for the group as it was a stressful week for all of us and didn’t want to contribute to more stress as I was a little ahead in my homework.

Activity # 2 Individual activity on self-care assessment and creative work
Summary of Leadership/Followership learning resulting from this activity work (1-2 sentences):
Overall this week I believe that I have grown tremendously in my leadership role as I have learned to delegate and work with a team successfully to ensure success of a project. I learned that having the role of a leader, does not require me to work alone or to make all the decisions myself, but it includes leading the team but also utilizing everyone’s input to ensure that our goals are similar and that we are on the same page in completing the project.

Activity #1: Reflect on your in-class contribution
Weekly topic: Course Introduction and Overview of Leadership & Innovation
This week I felt that my in-class contributions were minimal, however, I appreciated that with leadership comes a lot of responsibility, however, when one is confident about one’s own leadership qualities, creativity is nurtured and thrives and from creativity innovative ideas can and do occur.
This week I realized that I had never given much thought to the concept of Followership. Leadership always seems to take the spotlight in all organizations, always something that we hope to excel at and have seen how leadership always appears to be highly valued. Followership is absolutely essential to the success of any leader. I will give this some more thought as I will evaluate my leadership style.

Summary of Leadership/Followership contribution (1-2 sentences):
This week I completed my leadership self-assessment and was the assigned leader for the group. I posted questions for the group to encourage dialogue asking: what had others found in their self-assessment; and how did their leadership qualities align with the course readings. I also asked the group if there were any “aha” moments when reviewing the content. I did this to facilitate discussion and responded to students’ posts to keep the discussion flowing and engaging. I found this theory content very interesting and appreciated what I found out about myself through completing the self-assessment.
