In the 1800’s health was viewed differently than today. Before modern science and medicine, people suffered greatly from infectious diseases (Falkner, 2018). The concept of health was then regarded as being disease free (Falkner, 2018). Later, with more advancements in medicine in the 1900’s, health began to be thought of as being able to independently operate in society (Falkner, 2018). Vaccines helped eradiate diseases in the 1900’s, and the concept of health began to shift its focus to prevention (Falkner, 2018). In 1948 with World Health Organization was formed to address health promotion (Falkner, 2018). This is when health began to be viewed more holistically, taking emotional, spiritual and mental health into consideration as well as physical aspects (Falkner, 2018). Addressing all of these areas is a goal of health promotion because it increases overall well-being, which helps a person live in a state of wellness, therefore preventing as much illness as possible. If illness does occur, a person may still be able to maintain a state of wellness by making healthy lifestyle choices and using healthy coping mechanisms (Falkner, 2018). Health promotion started as a way to reduce morbidity and mortality rates (Falkner, 2018). Now health promotion has evolved to include spiritual, mental, and physical wellness (Falkner, 2018).
Using the rationale of evidence-based practice will give a nurse the accurate and up to date tools to properly educate his or her patients with. Not only do evidence based practice interventions standardize health promotion teaching, it will also create better patient outcomes.
