DISCUSSION POST # 1 Danielle

The objectives outlined in Healthy People 2020 shift the healthcare focus from a responsive approach to health promotion and disease prevention. An aging population and increased need for home healthcare due to disabilities, help push the community towards more health promotion (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018).

One health initiative identified by Healthy People 2020 is to reduce substance abuse, involving drugs and alcohol in the U.S. This has a major impact on not only the person affected, but their families and communities as well. Aside from health issues, substance abuse is often linked to school and work disruptions, child abuse, financial strain, domestic violence, and familial complications (Healthy People 2020, 2021). In 2014 alone, there were over 43,000 deaths related to drug overdose and another 88,000 deaths associated with alcohol misuse (SAMHSA, 2020). Despite these facts, substance abuse continues to be a major health issue in the U.S., especially amongst adolescents. Since this Healthy People 2020 initiative, substance abuse is being tackled both on the local and national levels. National Prevention Week, STOP Underage Drinking, and ‘Talk. They Hear You’, are a few national campaigns aimed at suppressing substance abuse amongst adolescents. They provide a variety of resources for families and teens, increase public awareness and community involvement and work within schools to provide education on the topic. STOP Underage Drinking is an online resource which provides local/national resources and funding opportunities to help combat teen substance abuse (SAMHSA, 2020).

DISCUSSION POST # 2 Kathleen

Healthy People 2020 (HP 202) is a set of comprehensive goals to be implemented both national and local levels with an objective to improve the health of all Americans through the achievement of high-quality care, with the absence of preventable diseases, disability, injury & premature death resulting to longer lives (Burggraf et al., 2014).

Older adults are one of the focuses of HP 2020. They are the fastest-growing age group and are called the first baby boomers. They are at high risk for chronic diseases including arthritis, diabetes, congestive heart disease, and dementia. One of the goals and objectives of HP 2020 is to promote health and decrease the risk for chronic diseases through healthful diets and achievement and maintenance of healthy body weight (Edelman & Kudzma, 2018). In accordance with that, the US Department of Agriculture launched the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) which provides nutritional benefits to fill in the budget of the families in need in order to provide healthy food on their table. SNAP is eligible for the elderly 60 years old and older. After their application process, they will receive an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card, that they can use to purchase groceries (US Department of Agriculture, 2022)

In addition to that, the city of Los Angeles Department of Aging offers the Senior Emergency Meals Program which offers two meals per day or equivalent to 14 meals per week. The meal boxes are delivered once per week to individual residences. (Los Angeles Department of Aging, 2022). Moreover, they have also created the End of Loneliness Initiative (ELI) to provide older adults access to virtual clubs to decrease isolation, especially during a pandemic. This will give them the opportunity to have access to their passion such as arts and crafts, gardening, general exercise, music, books, and all kinds of social groups.
