Personal Value and Hospitals Values

Week 13 Discussion Board

Acting in the C-Suite role assigned (CEO: Bradley & Collins, CFO: Gates & Martin, CNO: Eggleston & Villes) identify and share with the class your hospital’s core values, core purpose, and what the future of the organization vividly looks like in 30 years. (Chapter 13 #1)

  1. What do you personally value? What guides decision making and forms the foundation upon which you act? List three to five and then compare and identify your hospital’s values.

  1. Identify the purpose of why your hospital exists today and for the next 100 years. Distill the essence of your presence by using the performance improvement techniques asking the five whys, or using a fishbone diagram to get to the root. This purpose should have inspirational meaning to those working within your hospital.

  1. With a clarity of your collective purpose and value system, envision and describe with strong conviction in vivid detail your hospital 30 years from today. This should include a goal that aligns both purpose and values; when spoken others say “wow” and understand it right away.

Personal Value and Hospitals Values

My personal values include but are not limited to valuing human dignity, autonomy social justice, empathy, and professionalism. Such values resonate well with my role as a nurse and the values of the hospital where I work, Yatter Hospital. At Yatter Hospital, we uphold five core values, including integrity, patient-centeredness, respect, accountability, and compassion. Compassion is similar to empathy, while patient-centeredness and respect also encompass human dignity, autonomy, and social justice. Integrity and accountability are enshrined in professionalism and social justice.

Decision Making

Decision-making is a vital aspect of all organizations that must take a logical process to ensure effectiveness. Within the healthcare environment, available policies, rules and regulations, and professionalism can guide the decision-making process (Munro, 2019). Practitioners always ensure to make decisions that are professionally logical, ethical, and in compliance with the set rules and regulations. Similarly, I base my decisions on these principles.

Purpose of the Hospital

Yatter Hospital’s goal is to provide exceptional quality patient care and experiences. The mission that forms the basis of this goal is its commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and service to our communities. The vision that Yatter Hospital aims to achieve today and in the next 100 years is to improve the lives of the people we serve by providing access to high-value, patient-centered care in collaboration with those who share our values.

Application of the Fishbone Diagram

The Fishbone diagram is a tool that helps in solving problems by demonstrating the causes and effects of a situation to guide the development of the solution from the root cause perspective (American Society for Quality (ASQ), 2021). The Fishbone diagram can also employ the 5 whys approach when exploring the root cause of a problem in which the answer to the why question forms the basis of the preceding question (ASQ), 2021). I joined Yatter hospital to further its mission and vision. By applying the 5 whys, the hospital cannot improve people’s health without qualified and committed nurses. The lack of qualified nurses stems from s lack of proper training and an individual urge to improve professionally. To be a professional and a committed nurse, nurses must love their profession. Moreover, colleagues can also contribute to making nursing attractive to others (Baek, Han, & Ryu, 2019). By providing answers and solutions to these issues, I have been able to be the best version of myself as a professional nurse.

Nature of Yatter Hospital in 30 years

Yatter Hospital currently offers both outpatient and inpatient services for all categories of patients, from children to the elderly. Capacity is the greatest challenge it faces because, many a time, the hospital has had to refer patients to other hospitals because it cannot accommodate them. The hospital is subdivided into maternity with 100 beds, inpatient with 1000 beds, and outpatient sections. In the next 30 years, the hospital aims to expand considerably by adding a pediatric section for children and a special section for the elderly. The bed capacity of the maternity ward should be expanded to at least 500 beds to accommodate the increasing cases of births. Each section should provide both outpatient and inpatient services independently to facilitate care provision. An efficient electronic health record (HER) system should be developed to ensure productive collaboration between the sections and services providers. Yatter Hospital aims to be the go-to healthcare facility for all patients who need any form of care and be sure to access it in the highest possible quality and experience.
