Organizational Change and Ethical-Legal Influences in Advanced Practice Nursing Case Study

Legal and ethical issues in healthcare help in enhancing care delivery and positive patient experiences and outcomes. In the case study, every care provider has some legal and ethical implications for their actions. For example, Stephanie (medical assistant) may have caused serious ethical and legal offenses by prescribing medications even though she does not have a prescriptive authority (Zou, 2018). Amoxicillin is the wrong medication to prescribe to treat cough. The nurse practitioner and the medical director can investigate this issue and apply appropriate solutions to the problem. Failure to investigate the issue might result in serious ethical and legal problems.

The kind of illegal behavior observed in the case study should be prevented to ensure similar ones do not occur in the future. To prevent the further occurrence of such behaviors in the future it is important to provide training to all medical assistants to clearly define for them their roles and boundaries (Campione & Famolaro, 2018). A clear role definition will prevent trespass and confusion during practice. Another solution is the establishment of an efficient policy in the facility to penalize people who breathe rules. This will ensure everyone only practice what is defined within their roles (Campione & Famolaro, 2018). The organization may also implement an electronic prescribing system with the ability to detect medication errors and provide warning alerts.

Leadership skills are essential perquisites for achieving successful change implementation in healthcare. Based on the case study, emotional intelligence is one important quality to ensure an efficient conversation with Stephanie (Bolin, 2019). The nurse can be stressed and may become emotional. Neither of the parties should be emotional. Respect is another important quality. Although Stephanie made a mistake, she still deserves to be addressed with respect (Bolin, 2019). Professionalism is important when resolving such issues.
