Liberal Education for Generalist Nursing Practice

Liberal education should be encouraged in nursing education due to its significance to nursing students. According to Kooken & Kerr (2018), education in the liberal arts and sciences exposes nursing students to structure as well as content, and this becomes part of critical thinking. Nursing students as well as practicing nurses must be critical thinkers throughout the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care). Most liberal arts and science enroll undergraduates from throughout the university and around the globe. Liberal education has many other positive implications for nursing students. According to Kooken & Kerr (2018), liberal education improves their skills to navigate workplace diversities, communicate, make decisions, and think globally. Additionally, schools that provide a liberal education to students help them improve their abilities and values.

Liberal education classes in nursing may help address issues of importance to the nursing profession. For example, it helps enhance nurses’ ability to accomplish daily activities. Nurses need to monitor vital signs, clinical manifestations, lab values, and response to medication and treatments (Gomez, 2017). These issues need critical thinking to accomplish. It will address problems and errors related to writing nursing reports. Nurses need to report daily to other nurses and healthcare providers. Communication is essential in providing quality reports and a smooth transition. Additionally, liberal education will address communication issues in nursing practice. Nurses communicate with patients from all over the population (Gomez, 2017). Liberal education allows nurses to learn about a world of differences through analysis of the history of the world, studying foreign languages, and experiences of various cultures and traditions. Therefore, liberal education should be part and parcel of nursing education.
