Interview Questions and Analysis

One of the best ways to understand the issues that surround a particular profession is to interview professionals in the field. Through an interview, one is able to know the specific functional roles that the interview is currently performing, those that he or she can perform based on identified skills, and areas that need improvement (Nguyen & Robinson, 2020). Aspiring professionals can utilize information gathered from an interview to develop growth strategies and prepare effectively for specific roles in their careers. The purpose of this discussion is to present the responses obtained after interviewing a nurse informaticist. The discussion will also include a detailed analysis of the responses in relation to the ANA functional areas, TIGER competencies, and QSEN competencies.

Interview Questions and Answers

What is your current role in your organization?

I am currently the Nurse Informatics Officer of my organization. I have been serving in this position for 5 years. In my current functional capacity, I establish direction for the organization to solve issues that surround the integration of information technology into healthcare delivery. I also develop strategic plans and work with members of multidisciplinary teams to create policies that are aimed at strengthening informatics systems in the organization.

What challenges have you overcome, currently encounter, and foresees?

I have encountered numerous challenges in my role as a Nurse Informatics Officer.  The major one is limited informatics skills among nurses who are required to support the integration of various technological developments. One challenge that I am currently experiencing concerns influencing the organization to budget for technological changes that are required to advance healthcare delivery today. The major challenge that I foresee in the future is dealing with high employee turnover due to the anticipated emergence of even more advanced technologies. There is likely to be massive resistance from staff who are not ready to learn new skills to support the integration of these technologies.

How does your current role relate to ANA functional areas for nurse informaticists?

My current role as a Nurse Informatics Officer perfectly aligns with ANA functional areas for nurse informaticists. The specific functional areas include; Administration, Leadership, and Management, Quality and Performance Improvement, and Policy Development and Advocacy. My role entails providing direction with the aim of improving healthcare quality as I advocate for the provision of quality and safe care to patients.

How does your current role relate to TIGER and QSEN competencies?

There is a close alignment between my current role and TIGER as well as QSEN competencies. The specific TIGER competencies that enable me to perform my roles effectively include Clinical Nursing, Quality Management, Coordination of Interprofessional Care, Nursing Management, and IT Management in Nursing. Additionally, I often apply the six QSEN competencies in my daily practice as a Nurse Informatics Officer. The QSEN competencies include safety, informatics, patient-centered care, quality, teamwork and collaboration, and evidence-based practice.

Analysis

My vision of my future as a nurse informaticist adequately aligns with the interviewee’s current role. Although I am currently interested in development and genomics/genetics, I am looking forward to becoming a nurse informatics officer, a role that will change my functional area to Administration, Leadership, and Management. Similar to the interviewee’s opinion, one challenge that I foresee in the nurse informaticist role is dealing with high turnover among nurses. Booth et al. (2021) explain how technological innovations will disrupt the future nursing workforce and the actions that organizations should take to enhance digital adaptation and prevent turnover. The ANA functional areas and TIGER competencies that I prefer differ slightly from those of the interviewee. However, my QSEN competencies are similar to those of the interviewee. All these functional areas and competencies are still relevant and are aligned with my future role as a nurse informaticist. Generally, my assessment of my own knowledge, skills, and attitudes about the functional areas, standards, and competencies has broadened and strengthened my alignment based on the interview.
