Interview Paper: Evidence-Based Practice
Nursing research and evidence-based practice are related concepts that help to drive the nursing profession. Through research, nurses are able to generate evidence that is used to develop clinical interventions. Nurses demonstrate evidence-based practice by combining the best available evidence with clinical expertise and client preferences to deliver optimal health care (QSEN Institute., n.d.). Different people in the healthcare field have varied opinions concerning the roles of evidence-based practice and nursing research in improving the quality of care that nurses deliver to patients. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of an interview conducted to explore how different people perceive the role of nursing research and evidence-based practice. The individuals that have been interviewed include a registered nurse in clinical practice, a nurse practitioner, and a physician.
Interview Summary
Interviews are effective data collection approaches in situations where the investigator is interested in understanding the perceptions and opinions of respondents regarding an issue of interest. In the current scenario, the investigator is interested in understanding how different people in the health care arena perceive the significance of nursing research and evidence-based practice. The three people who have been interviewed include a registered nurse in clinical practice, a nurse practitioner, and a physician. These three categories of people have been asked similar questions to gather their opinions regarding the named topic. The questions asked are as follows;
- What role do you believe EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE plays in improving the care nurses provide to patients?
- What role do you believe NURSING RESEARCH plays in improving the care nurses provide to patients?
- How have you integrated either EBP and/or Nursing Research into your practice?
- Do you appreciate that nurses should embrace evidence-based practice?
- Do you appreciate that nurses should participate in nursing research?
- What is your understanding of the difference between a quality improvement project and research?
Similarities and Differences in the Responses
- What role do you believe EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE plays in improving the care nurses provide to patients?
Healthcare professionals are required to apply evidence-based practice when delivering care to patients. The registered nurse in clinical practice, the nurse practitioner, and the physician have similar views regarding the role that evidence-based practice plays in improving the care that nurses provide to patients. The three professionals agree that evidence-based practice shapes clinical practice by ensuring that nurses apply standardized interventions to treat patients. As reported by the physician, nurses normally utilize clinical practice guidelines to deliver care to patients. These guidelines are usually based on research-based evidence, a factor that promotes the application of validated intervention to address patients’ health needs thereby improving health outcomes.
- What role do you believe NURSING RESEARCH plays in improving the care nurses provide to patients?
Nursing research is a form of scientific inquiry that is systematically executed to determine the best practice to improve patient care. The registered nurse in clinical practice, the nurse practitioner, and the physician believe that nursing research plays a crucial role in improving the care that nurses provide to patients. According to the registered nurse and the nurse practitioner, nursing research generates new knowledge that is usually applied in clinical practice to address patients’ problems. The two professionals have a common agreement that as nurses continue to provide nursing care to patients, they occasionally come across health problems which they do not know how best they can solve. Therefore, it is by designing and completing research studies that nurses are able to gather new knowledge to address those problems. The physician has asserted that nursing research plays a role in improving the care that nurses provide to patients by developing health interventions to be applied with patients who are suffering from different types of health problems.
- How have you integrated either EBP and/or Nursing Research into your practice?
Healthcare professionals usually integrate evidence-based practice and nursing research into practice in a number of ways. Due to the variations in their clinical roles and specialties, the registered nurse, the nurse practitioner, and the physician have reported different ways in which they incorporate evidence-based practice and nursing research into their practice with patients. For example, the registered nurse reported that she integrates evidence-based practice by adhering to clinical practice guidelines when administering medications to patients. Adhering to evidence-based practice enables her to observe the 5Rs of medication administration namely; “right drug, right route, right time, right dose and right patient.” As reported by the nurse practitioner, she integrates nursing research and evidence-based practice by implementing both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions that are supported by research evidence to patients with type 2 diabetes. In his advanced role, the physician has admitted that he integrates evidence-based practice by recommending therapeutic interventions that are supported by research evidence.
- Do you appreciate that nurses should embrace evidence-based practice?
The three professionals have a common perception that nurses should embrace and support evidence-based practice. They agree that evidence-based practice offers guidance to nurses on how best they can approach patients’ problems. Therefore, nurses should make EBP part of their professional lives to drive the nursing profession forward.
- Do you appreciate that nurses should participate in nursing research?
The registered nurse in clinical practice, the nurse practitioner, and the physician believe that nurses should participate in nursing research. They recognize the nurse’s role in research. Therefore, in their view, the three professionals agree that by participating in nursing research. Nurses will be able to generate new knowledge that will help to advance the nursing profession.
- What is your understanding of the difference between a quality improvement project and research?
A quality improvement project is different from research. While the registered nurse believes that a quality improvement project can quality to be a research, the nurse practitioner and the physician believe that a quality improvement project utilizes existing knowledge to improve clinical practice whereas research generates new knowledge that can be applied to improve clinical practice. However, the three professionals agree that like nursing research, quality improvement projects promote healthcare quality and patient safety.
Summary and Conclusion
From the interview, it is evident that EBP, nursing research, and quality improvement projects play an essential role in improving the care that nurses offer to patients. Similar views are documented by Polit and Beck (2017) and Gray et al. (2017). Additionally, it is clear from the interview that healthcare professionals integrate nursing research and EBP differently based on their roles and areas of specialties. Generally, nurses should participate in nursing research and continue to embrace EBP to be able to advance the nursing profession.
