Interprofessional Communication and Collaboration for Improving Patient Health Outcomes

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) takes four years to complete and often includes liberal courses to fulfill general education requirements specific to the nursing specialty. For several reasons, a BSN program can prepare the student to be a more active interprofessional team (Catalano, 2019). It provides students with knowledge and experience that contributes to a rich foundation of clinical judgment, physical assessment, patient-centered care, leadership, and others. These skills and abilities enable graduates to be part of a more active interprofessional team.

Communication is very important in nursing to enhance both interprofessional collaboration and to build a nurse-patient therapeutic relationship. BSN education improves students’ verbal communication skills (Catalano, 2019). Excellent verbal communication is the core to providing or passing accurate and honest information. Education also improves non-verbal communication skills that can improve a good relationship between the nurse and the patient (Catalano, 2019). It also improves active listening, written communication as well as presentation skills. Other communication skills such as empathy, compassion, and cultural awareness are also improved.

In the website provided, the article “Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity” presents information that impacts the use of effective communication (campaignforaction.org, n.d.). For instance, the article recommends that nurses initiate work to develop shared agenda for addressing social determinants of health. Collaboration and sharing ideas is one method of ensuring effective communication among professionals (campaignforaction.org, n.d.). The two elements (collaboration and shared ideas) will impact (improve) effective communication in healthcare organizations.
