Identifying Search Strategy

To Prepare
Review the Learning Resources covering source exploration.
Explore search strategies to determine what will work best for your problem.
Consider the connection between source exploration, search strategies, and leadership styles.
The Assignment: (1–2 pages)
Construct a short paper in which you identify the search strategy you will use to gather evidence for your practice problem. Why did you select this search strategy, and how will this strategy be most beneficial for the problem? How did your role as leader assist you in making this decision? Be specific and provide examples

Identify Search Strategy

Doctorally-prepared nurses contribute to evidence-based practice by identifying research-based interventions that healthcare organizations can implement to address practice problems. After identifying a practice problem, doctorally-prepared nurses should explore sources to establish the best ones to consult to obtain the required evidence (Dang et al., 2021). The next step should entail the identification of search strategies that they will apply to locate evidence from the selected sources. Leadership styles should guide doctorally-prepared nurses to identify relevant sources and search strategies to gather evidence for a particular practice problem (Jones et al., 2020). The purpose of this assignment is to identify the search strategy that will best guide the collection of evidence for the practice problem in the proposed DNP project.

Search Strategy and the Rationale for Selection

The search strategy utilized in the proposed project entails six steps. The steps include; identification of a practice problem, development of a research question in the PICO format, exploration of sources, identification of search terms, developing the search approach using Boolean operators, and conducting the preliminary search. The rationale for selecting the identified search strategy is that nursing organizations support its effectiveness in helping nurses and healthcare professionals to locate evidence to address a practice problem (Dang et al., 2021). Using the strategy, it will be easier for the nurse to locate sources that specifically address the problem.

Benefits of the Search Strategy

The primary benefit of the search strategy is that it will generate a mixture of resources with the required evidence to address the practice problem. Nursing databases contain resources with evidence of different levels. Some of these are randomized-controlled trials, some are cross-sectional studies, while others are systematic reviews. These studies contain useful information regarding the effectiveness of educating nursing staff about obesity management in influencing patients’ decisions regarding disease management (Jones et al., 2020). The nurse will be able to explore these resources with the help of these strategies.

The chosen strategy begins with the identification of a practice problem. The research question that will direct the search problem includes the issue in question, the proposed change, and the expected outcome. Besides, the search terms and Boolean operators to be used during the preliminary search includes aspects of both the problem and the proposed practice change (Foster et al., 2014). These are beneficial in that they will enable the nurse to locate resources that are specific to the problem and the proposed intervention.

The Role of Leadership Style

Leaders play a crucial role in influencing practice change in healthcare organizations. Doctorally-prepared nurses have the power to assume leadership roles in their organizations (Benson, 2021). The nurse implements a transformational leadership style to influence change in practice. The nurse’s role as a leader has influenced decision-making during the selection of a search strategy (Hussain et al., 2019). For instance, it has guided the nurse to develop search terms that will result in the collection of research-based evidence that will cause an improvement in clinical practice. Precisely, evidence that supports the implementation of a nursing education program will cause a change that promotes obesity management among patients by influencing them to enroll in a weight loss program.

Conclusion

Developing a search strategy helps nurses to locate resources with the best evidence to address a clinical practice problem. A search strategy that entails the development of a research question is commonly used in nursing research to locate evidence. The chosen strategy is beneficial in that it will enable the nurse to locate resources that are specific to the problem and the proposed intervention.
