  1. Discuss how the family history, culture, and context affect the Sanchez family member that you chose. Use specific information and examples from the movie.

The selected member of the Sanchez family was Jose Sanchez. Jose was a resilient man who endured numerous hardships in his life. For example, he travelled all the way from Mexico to Los Angeles to stay with a distant relative ‘El Carlifornio’. In California, he was a hardworking man who worked trimming fences in a rich neighborhood. Jose was also a family man. When working, he met Maria, a nanny who was an American citizen and they got married. Jose continued working to support his growing family. Even when his pregnant wife was wrongly deported, he continued working to support their first two children. Maria later found her way back with their other young son, Chucho. Jose and Maria two other children, Toni, Memo, and Jimmy. Jose loved his daughters so that he spent a fortune on his first daughter’s wedding ceremony. Unlike his other children, Jose  did not have a good relationship with his son, Chucho, who was attracted to street life and sold marijuana instead of getting a job. Despite of their estranged relationship, Jose mourned for his Chucho’s death after he was shot by the police. Jose and Maria also took in Jimmy’s son after Jimmy was incarcerated (Navy, 1995).

  1. In addition, describe any issues that you encountered. Did you find this process easy/difficult? What did you learn that surprised you? How could this type of activity help a client

The main issue I encountered when completing the assignment was completing the Genogram and including all the information I could about Jose’s family. Although the process was challenging, it helped me learn the importance of familial relationships in people’s lives. Completing genograms can help to gather objective information about clients and their families which makes it easier to view their issues within the larger familial context including culture.
