E-learning is rapidly gaining popularity as a potent training strategy that organizations and academic institutions can adopt to enhance learning. E-learning is a novel and easy form of learning in which people can attend lessons remotely in the comfort of their present locations with the aid of digital gadgets such as phones, computers, tablets, and so on (Padilla Rodriguez & Armellini, 2021). Despite the advantages and the great potential that e-Learning presents in corporate training, it faces some challenges and barriers that must be addressed. This paper will discuss the pros and cons and barriers of e-learning, and recommend ways to address them, and also ensure e-learning aligns with an organization’s mission, values, or goals.

Advantages and Disadvantages of E-Learning as a Training Method in the Workplace

E-learning is associated with low training costs for the company because other costs such as travel costs are not necessary and it only requires a few resources such as a computer and digital tool for taking notes (Ipag, 2021). It also saves time people waste while traveling, arranging a classroom, and so on. On the flip side, with e-learning, areas that may require face-to-face training, like e-leadership may not be well assimilated. There is also a lack of personalization in e-learning courses because of distance (Padilla Rodriguez & Armellini, 2021).

Potential Barriers to E-Learning Readiness

Inadequate tech knowledge and experience are major barriers to e-learning because online students usually believe that they need advanced computer skills to participate (High School of America, 2019). Some students also have negative experiences with virtual learning, such as tedious compliance needs that make them reluctant to participate in it again. The status quo also impedes e-learning because people are used to face-to-face learning and find it hard to shift (Isaias, 2020).

Strategies for Combating the Potential Barriers of E-Learning

Teachers should expose students to computers and train them on how to undertake online learning to get them acquainted and work on their own (Isaias, 2020). Teachers should ask about students’ likes and dislikes regarding their past experiences with e-learning to exploit the good ones and address the bad ones (High School of America, 2019). Training institutions and organizations should also blend e-learning with physical training in the curriculum to kill the status quo and enable a gradual transition.

A Recommendation for Ensuring That E-Learning Aligns with Organization’s Mission, Values, or Goals

To align e-learning aligns with an organization’s mission, values, or goals, organizations should consider and incorporate long-term business goals while planning the training. This will ensure that the organization is forward-looking and expects the online training to help in achieving future goals of the organization (Ipag, 2021).

E-learning is a new training approach that is worth embracing by all organizations to train both employees and students. It will facilitate learning because it addresses the complications associated with physical learning, such as traveling to a specific venue, arranging a classroom, providing necessary resources, and so on. However, organizations must remember that e-learning is also associated with many challenges, such as a lack of tech knowledge and experience and the need for digital gadgets among learners. They need to address these challenges and ensure access to the necessary resources to enhance the adoption of e-learning.
