Response to Discussion

The enactment of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in 2010 laid a foundation for reforms in the United States healthcare system. These reforms target the poor quality of healthcare, limited access to healthcare services for some populations, and high healthcare costs (Salmond & Echevarria, 2017). According to Cleveland et al. (2019), the legislative framework that the ACA provides gives nurse practitioners an opportunity to shape healthcare delivery and healthcare costs both in the hospital settings and in the community. For example, you have stated clearly in your discussion that ACA emphasizes preventive services and primary care, provides insurance to the uninsured, and addresses healthcare reform to meet consumer needs for safe care and improved health outcomes. Notably, offering full payment to nurse practitioners for providing preventive services in outpatient settings is just one of the ways through which ACA is addressing issues related to healthcare access, quality, and cost.

Nurses who have completed their Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program can serve as leaders in their organizations in different capacities. They have the skills and knowledge to improve financial management in their organizations (Waxman, 2018). For example, doctorally-prepared nurses can present their patient advocacy powers to build partnerships and innovate economic solutions aimed at enhancing patient quality and safety as a strategy to optimize reimbursements from insurers. They can lead legislative action committees that are aimed at helping healthcare entities to achieve positive financial growth (Cleveland et al., 2019). From your post, it is clear that DNP nurses can implement practice changes and evaluate the impact of outcomes on the patient, the care delivery system, and fiscally. As leaders, doctorally-prepared nurses direct process changes and influence the implementation of evidence-based interventions necessary to reduce healthcare costs and improve the economic performance of their organizations through reimbursement optimization.
