Discussion Board #2, Nursing Theory

Within the Discussion Board area, write 250 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. You are required to use 1 scholarly resource, in addition to your textbook. Be substantive and clear and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

Assuming that you are beyond the novice stage of skill acquisition, consider a time when you again became a novice. For example, you may believe yourself to be an expert in orthopedic nursing, but one day you are asked to float to a new unit where you are unfamiliar with the routines of that unit and the particular assessments and medications common to those types of patients.

Part 1

How did you use your more advanced practices to step back into that novice nurse role?
Did you have a preceptor assigned to you?
What resources did you use?
Part 2

If you are a preceptor to a novice nurse, how can you be effective in sharing your experience without being intimidating?
What makes an ideal preceptor?

Part 1

Although nurses might have transitioned to a more advanced stage of expertise in a given area, they might still find themselves in the novice stage again depending on the practice situations that they find themselves in. For example, I recently became a novice despite the fact that I am beyond the novice stage of skill acquisition. I am an operating room and I returned to the novice stage when I had to handle a surgical patient in a critical condition for the first time. I used my more advanced practices to step back into that novice nurse role. Precisely, I applied the critical thinking skills I had acquired as a proficient nurse to ensure that the patient received quality care. According to Rubenfeld (2014), critical thinking is a crucial skill that nurses should possess as it is associated with high-quality health care. I did not have a preceptor assigned to me at that time. However, I relied on critical practice guidelines and peer-reviewed literature to ensure that the patient received optimum care.

Part 2

Novice nurses need preceptors to guide them through their educational and professional journey ensuring that they do not engage in practices that might compromise the quality of care that is delivered to patients. If I were a preceptor to a novice nurse, I can be effective in sharing my experience without being intimidating to the incumbent. According to Benner et al. (2009), it is important to analyze and examine the nature of clinical knowledge and judgment for a nurse in order to understand the specific areas that need to be focused on to address the knowledge gap. According to Dube and Rakhudu (2021), an ideal preceptor is one who understands the level of knowledge acquisition of the nurses they are precepting to be able to provide appropriate guidance. A good preceptor should guide a novice nurse on how to apply critical thinking skills to make a clinical judgment.
