As you begin wrapping up your DNP-965 course and manuscript, address the following using at least 250-500 words. Spelling and grammar will be reviewed and graded.
Reflect on the manuscript you have written. Your manuscript included the development and evaluation of a nursing care delivery model, nursing theoretical model, and strategies found in the research to improve a measurable patient outcome. Based on your findings, how would describe the theoretical alignment of the project to the model?
Discussion 6
The DPI project was structured around the patient risk detection theory and Johnson’s behavioral system model. Additionally, the primary investigator used strategies supported by evidence obtained from research to improve measurable patient outcomes, specifically, episodes of violence following the implementation of the Broset Violence Checklist (BVC) tool. According to Backhouse and Ogunlayi (2020), it is important to base quality improvement projects on nursing care delivery frameworks and nursing theoretical frameworks in order to understand how specific reforms affect staff and benefit patients. The purpose of this discussion is to describe the theoretical alignment of the project to the model based on the project’s findings.
Considering the findings obtained from the quality improvement project, it is appropriate to conclude that the project is adequately aligned with the patient risk detection theory and Johnson’s behavioral system model. Findings from the project indicate that the implementation of the BVC tool provided early identification of patients at risk of episodes of violence and enhanced nursing staff awareness of these cases. This awareness can guide patient safety interventions aimed at preventing episodes of violence (Dickson, 2021; Moursel et al., 2018). The patient risk detection theory primarily assumes that nurses who can predict factors that increase violence risk at the time of assessment can design relevant interventions to address those risks before patients can cause any harm to people around them (Robert, 2018). The project is aligned with this theory in that nurses in the psychiatric unit have demonstrated their ability to use the BVC tool to assess patients for risk of violence. Using assessment findings, they have been able to design appropriate measures to prevent episodes of violence thereby promoting the safety of healthcare providers and patients.
Moreover, there is a close alignment between the project and Johnson’s behavioral system model. According to Petiprin (2020), Johnson’s behavioral system model conceptualizes that the nurse is charged with the primary responsibility of preventing patients from suffering negative health outcomes. They apply their knowledge and expertise to improve the behavioral functioning of patients. Based on the findings, the project has demonstrated the crucial role that the nurse plays in ensuring that their patients obtain quality health outcomes (Treas et al., 2018). For example, nurses in the psychiatric unit have implemented the BVC tool per shift in the project to identify behavioral issues that might cause the patients to display aggression or violence. Their goal in the process is to improve the behavioral functioning of patients and prevent them from suffering negative health outcomes.
In summary, when developing quality improvement projects, nursing students in their DNP programs should ensure that those projects are grounded on specific nursing theoretical models. For example, the project’s findings have proven that the quality improvement project is adequately aligned with the patient risk detection theory and Johnson’s behavioral system model. This alignment is highly relevant because it enables the primary investigator to understand how BVC use per shift affects staff and benefits patients.
