Innovation Proposal

Role of Innovative Nurse Leader

In this section, explain the role of the innovative nurse leader. Be sure to explain and connect the role of an innovative nurse leader to your proposal. The rationale for proposing this innovation should be provided with a discussion on the anticipated disruption that will emerge, as a result of the implementation of your innovation. Include an in-text citation and full reference on the reference page for the role of a nurse innovator.

Summary of Community of Practice

Summarize your community of practice (CoP) that was established during your CPE. Things to be included in this summary are as follows: The organizational characteristics including services provided, size of the service area and organizational structure (leadership structure); the demographic characteristics of the population served including quantitative data (age, gender, ethnicity, education levels, poverty levels, etc.) and qualitative data (trends observed); address the team member roles of those stakeholders you chose to be part of your team (including both the formal and informal roles of these individuals); and the values that are shared by the members of your team in relation to your innovation and how these values align with the organizational goals by providing real examples.

Internal and External Factors

Provide a discussion about your organization including the internal and external factors that prompted you to choose your proposed innovation.

Innovation Alignment

Assess how your proposed innovation aligns with either a professional, regulatory, and/or governmental strategic initiative in the organization identified in your CPE.

Purpose of the Innovation

Develop a purpose statement for your proposed innovation that provides the reason behind the need for the innovation. The purpose statement should be meaningful, applicable, realistic, specific, and clearly support the success of the innovation.

Goal for the Innovation

Last, discuss your goal for the proposed innovation (be specific to what you expect it to accomplish) in SMART+C format (i.e., Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timed, and Challenging).

Relevant Sources Review

Prior to writing this section you must search the WGU library and Internet to identify credible sources that have relevant information on your innovation topic. From your search, select the top five sources that are most relevant to your innovation plan. The five sources are to be scholarly, peer-reviewed sources that have been published in the last five years and are to be relevant to your proposed innovation. Each of these five sources should also be cited in your reference list. In this section, you will summarize the findings of each of the five sources by completing the following Relevant Sources Summary Table, which will list key findings from your sources.

APA formatted reference with a DOI or retrievable link. Present a detailed summary of the information you found from this source that addresses a description of the type of study, the design, key findings, and relevance to the proposed innovation. Numbers I-VII. From the WGU Levels of Evidence document under the Assessments tab located with supporting documents.

Ahmed, A. H., & Roumani, A. M. (2020). Breastfeeding monitoring improves maternal self-efficacy and satisfaction. The American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing, 24(6), 357-363. https://doi.org/10.1097/NMC.0000000000000658 The authors conducted a randomized controlled trial to determine the effects of an interactive web-based breastfeeding monitoring system on breastfeeding self-efficiency and satisfaction among mothers of full-term infants at 1, 2, and 3 months after hospital discharge. Fifty-seven mothers were in the control group and 49 were in the intervention group. Throughout the study, mothers were asked to enter breastfeeding data, received educational messages for 30 days, and completed the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BFSE) at 1, 2, and 3 months and the Maternal Breastfeeding Evaluation Scale (MBFES) at three months.  The study results showed that interactive web-based breastfeeding monitoring improved maternal breastfeeding self-efficiency and satisfaction.  This study shows a need for a mobile-based breastfeeding application, and it does improve patient satisfaction because they are getting the education necessary to succeed. Synthesis of the Literature

After you have completed your table, synthesize your findings from the literature to identify specific, logical, and clear patterns, trends, and gaps in the literature as they relate to your proposed innovation.

Recommendations for the Innovation

Develop specific, logical, and clear recommendations for your proposed innovation that is based on the literature that you summarized in your table and based on the need for the innovation in your organization identified in the CPE.  Be sure to include in-text citations here, linking back to your articles.

Methods

Process to Generate Ideas

Introduce this section, by discussing the process you used during your clinical/practice experiences (CPE) to identify your innovative idea. Include information on how you engaged stakeholders in the process of brainstorming ideas for an innovative change and how you came to a consensus for your innovative idea.

Examples of Big and Small Data in the Organization

Include examples of big and small data within your healthcare organization.

How Big Data Supports the Innovation

Discuss how big data supports the proposed innovation.

Technology Enhancements for the Innovation

Describe any technological enhancements that are required to implement the proposed innovation and a plausible justification for the identified enhancement.

Interprofessional Collaboration and Disruptive Innovation

Disruption of Innovation and Impact

Analyze how disruption from the proposed innovation positively impacts individuals, processes, and organizations. Discuss possible challenges that may occur, barriers, and structures that may need to be changed.

Strategies to Address the Challenges

Develop strategies to mitigate the challenges of disruption for individuals, processes, and organizations. Discuss how you will address those challenges and action steps that can be taken to overcome those challenges and bring individuals onboard to support your proposed innovation.

Benefits of Disruptive Innovation

Discuss how the proposed innovation can leverage benefits of disruptive innovation for cost-effective, quality healthcare outcomes. Be clear in your discussion as to how disruption empowers change and healthcare improvements, not just how it creates barriers to change.

Pre-Implementation Plan

Diffusion of Innovation

Apply the stages of Roger’s Diffusion of Innovation theory to your innovation plan by presenting strategies for managing the diffusion at all levels of the implementation. Discuss the five stages of adopters and the five types of adopters and how they each relate to the implementation of your innovation plan. Include information on the perceived barriers and facilitators of innovation diffusion. Please include an in-text citation and reference on the reference page.

Innovation Action Plan

Complete the following Innovation Action Plan table by including information on a minimum of 5 team members needed to implement your proposal along with their responsibilities and the timeline you are proposing for each of those responsibilities. These could be the same team members from the original CPE innovation team, but it could include other relevant members.

Financial Implications

Next, you are to discuss the financial implications of implementing the proposed innovation. You must address all three stages of your innovation proposal including the planning phase, the implementation phase, and the evaluation phase. Be sure to include things such as salaries/benefits if you must hire new employees, the cost of training, new equipment, the cost of team member time taken away from other duties, incentives, etc. Also, what are the positive financial rewards once the innovation is implemented (return on investment).

Interprofessional Communication Plan

Develop an interprofessional communication plan for the proposed innovation that will provide the necessary information especially to those who will be impacted and need to be involved with the new innovation once it is implemented. Be clear as to who needs to be involved, who will be impacted, what the innovation is, when things will occur (such as training and implementation), and the usability (i.e., they will want to know “what is in this for me” or “how will I benefit” or “how will the patients benefit”).

Evaluation of the Innovation

Finally, you need to determine how you will evaluate that each of those responsibilities of your team members have been completed successfully. Consider how you will evaluate the overall implementation and success of your proposed innovation including the SMART+C goal.

Conclusion

In your conclusion, bring the reader back to the purpose and rationale of your innovation plan. Emphasize how your innovation provides an opportunity or addresses a problem that will help improve organizational operations, services and/or outcomes. Reflect on the experience and process of developing an evidence-based innovation for your setting and the strengths and challenges of developing the innovation plan. Address lessons learned and how you will apply these lessons to future initiatives. Include information on how this innovation advances nursing practice and improves patient outcomes if appropriate. The purpose of this section is not to introduce new information, rather it should provide a review and summary of your proposed innovation, the process of implementation, and the expected outcomes as well. Also, include new insights that were identified and offer creative ideas for additional innovations in the future.
