address various challenges hindering quality health care services and positive patient outcomes (CMS.gov., 2021). Nurses have a crucial role to play in the development and execution of continuous quality improvement initiatives. Quality improvements are normally specific to an organization (CMS.gov., 2021). For example, suppose a health care facility experiencing increasing rates of postoperative readmissions. In that case, nurses can play a role in designing a plan to reduce such incidences by changing the discharge process.
Another example of continuous quality improvement is when nurses collaborate with other health care providers to establish ways of reducing incidences of pressure ulcers. Nurses will identify the problem, raise concerns, establish a team, share ideas, and develop new practices or policies to address the problem (University of Michigan, 2022). In this case, the health care facility might use alternating pressure air mattresses to address the problem. Nurses may develop a pressure ulcer prevention/management bundle to help solve the issue (Lavoie-Tremblay et al., 2018). This is a quality improvement means specifically to prevent pressure ulcers in this particular organization.
Another example of a quality improvement initiative is the implementation of Electronic Health Record systems to improve the accuracy of medication and prevent medical errors. Electronic Health Record Systems are effective in preventing medication errors and improving the quality of care provided to patients (University of Michigan, 2022). A nurse manager who is aware of the system might focus on process enhancement specific to the system. These are just a few examples of how continuous quality improvement could be applied in the care setting, however, there are many more that have not been discussed in this paper.
