Concept Analysis Template

Possible Concepts: The following concepts are not required; students may select one of these concepts or find another concept. Each selected concept must be associated with a nursing theory; the use of non-nursing theories is not allowed. If you have any questions regarding your concept or the nursing theory, please consult with your faculty member for assistance. Please note: the concepts of caring or cultural humility are not permitted for this assignment.

Criteria for Content

Support from nursing literature is required.
  2. Defining attributes:

A minimum of three (3) attributes are required.
Support from nursing literature is required.
Explanation:  An attribute identifies characteristics of a concept.  For this question, the characteristics of the selected nursing concept are identified and discussed.

Antecedent and Consequence
1 antecedent of the selected nursing concept.
1 consequence of the selected nursing concept.
Support from nursing literature is required.
Explanation:  An antecedent is an identifiable occurrence that happens before an event. An antecedent precedes a selected nursing concept. A consequence follows or is the result of an event.  The selected consequence follows or is the result of the selected nursing concept.

Name:

Definition/Explanation of the selected nursing concept:

Burnout refers to a psychological phenomenon where nurses experience a reduction in energy including emotional, physical, and psychological energy attributed to work-related stressors. Burnouts manifest in form of low motivation, physical and emotional exhaustion, and low productivity (Oliveira et al., 2019).

Three defining attributes:

  1. Emotional exhaustion: burnouts are mainly characterized by emotional exhaustion which refers to chronic fatigue caused by exposure to stressors that deplete one’s emotional resources. Nurses who are emotionally exhausted exhibit less motivation to work (Zeng et al., 2020).
  2. Depersonalization: Nurses experiencing burnout tend to develop negative attitudes about their jobs and as a result, may develop an indifferent attitude towards patients and their colleagues. Signs of depersonalization include a lack of mutual interaction with colleagues and difficulty developing effective nurse-patient relationships (Yuan & Xu, 2020).
  3. Inefficacy: Burnouts make nurses feel less competent about their abilities to work effectively with patients when they are emotionally exhausted and overwhelmed by their roles. As a result, they may have a diminished sense of personal accomplishment (Zeng et al., 2020).

1 Antecedent and 1 Consequence of the concept:

Antecedent:

The main antecedent to burnout in the nursing profession is chronic and continuous exposure to stressors in the workplace. According to Starc (2018), stressors may include excess workload, poor work relations with other healthcare professionals, and strict or insufficient supervision. Working with patients with complex needs, including terminally-ill patients, also leads to emotional exhaustion and burnout.

 Consequence:

One of the consequences of nurse burnouts is reduced quality of life as evidenced by poor physical and mental health. As per Zeng et al. (2020), nurses are at high risk of developing physical health problems such as cardiovascular illnesses and insomnia. Mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse disorders are also common consequences of burnout. Furthermore, behavioral issues such as irritability and aggressiveness also have a negative impact on the nurses’ quality of life.

Model Case:

Virginia is a registered nurse (RN) who works in the emergency unit. The unit sometimes has very many patients and Virginia is often asked to take on additional shifts. She loves working with patients hence she does not mind working extra hours although she barely sleeps and recently, she began feeling very exhausted and less motivated to work. Virginia realized that she gets irritated when attending to patients and even shouts when they do not give information fast enough or fail to do what she expects them to. She is no longer confident about her ability to engage effectively with patients and wishes she could just rest.

Theoretical Applications of the Concept:

As per Chipu and Downing (2020), Dorothea Orem’s Self-care Deficit Theory states that self-care includes actions that people take to maintain their wellbeing. Nurses are tasked with helping patients engage in self-care and improving their health but most nurses do not make any efforts to improve their own physical and mental health. Failure to prioritize self-care increases the risk of burnout. For instance, when nurses who work in stressful environments fail to engage in self-care, they increase the risk of emotional and physical exhaustion which negatively affects their productivity.

Reflection:

FNPs work with patients of all ages and numerous health problems hence they are bound to experience issues such as high workloads that may lead to physical and emotional exhaustion. The concept analysis findings illustrated the negative impacts of burnouts and the need for self-care for all nurses. As an FNP, I intend to always take time to engage in activities that improve my mental and physical health to ensure that I remain motivated and have sufficient energy to work with my patients.
