Behavioral competency

Behavioral competency

PURPOSE

Assess behavioral competencies within six (6) Core Competency Domains as established by Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! – This is a time intensive learning activity. It requires an honest and accurate assessment of your proficiency in practice. Careful reading and understanding of the Core Competency Domain definition and behavioral competencies within the domain will maximize assessment with the potential outcome of enhanced quality and safe care.

DIRECTIONS

1. Use the CPCA tool to rate (using a 1-5 scale 1=limited competency, 5=high level of competency) ALL behavioral competencies within each core domain.

2. Total ratings at the end of each core competency domain in the space provided.

3. In the designated space at the end of each core competency domain, identify your top competency need.

4. Submit to assigned Canvas area.

PLAN FOR IMPROVEMENT

EXAMPLE ONLY

Core Competency Domain AND Behavior Needing Improvement

Why When How Update
Patient-Centered Care: Allows patient to be the source of control I practice from the assumption that I as the nurse know what is best for the patient. I also assume that if I give up control, the patient will take advantage. I realize these are not valid assumptions as expanded knowledge and reflection this semester has allowed me to understand… I will begin working on this way of thinking and change my behaviors to reflect the behavioral competency with this core competency domain immediately. I will start by allowing my patients to decide when… Critical self-reflection

Seeking evidence to inform practice

Over the past 3 months I have consciously included this behavior into my nursing care. I use critical reflection after patient situations to ensure I am demonstrating the behavior in my practice.
EBP:

Applies evidence-based knowledge in clinical practice

I have a gap in knowledge, abilities and attitude related to applying EBP knowledge in my clinical practice. I also am not proficient in using the steps to EBP. I am aware that my facility uses guidelines, protocols and bundles but I do not understand the process for integrating into practice. Upon obtaining further knowledge and EBP abilities Successful completion of the EBP course in the EARN program
