Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity
Academic integrity and writing are closely related. When writing academic papers, students are required to maintain a high degree of integrity by avoiding plagiarism. A piece of written work that has been plagiarized lacks academic integrity. Therefore, students demonstrate academic integrity by writing original work (Adhiambo, 2019).
Professional practices and scholarly ethics are closely linked. Professional practice should be guided by evidence-based research (Walden University, 2021). Evidence obtained from research must accurately be documented to ensure that professional practitioners are not misled to implement interventions that can be harmful to patients. In this respect, standards have been put in place to ensure scholarly ethics by defining what is considered good or bad as far as the documentation of scholarly evidence or publications is concerned (Poreddi et al., 2021). Therefore, writers and health practitioners who possess strong scholarly ethics are able to document evidence that can be applied to professional practice to improve patient outcomes.
Grammarly and Turnitin are some of the online tools that students and scholars use to improve their written products and ensure academic integrity. Using Grammarly, one is able to check a written piece of work for speling, and grammatical mistakes. The tool also identifies and corrects issues related to punctuation and clarity. Turnitin is a tool that checks whether a written piece of work has been plagiarized. The tool improves academic integrity by detecting and matching the plagiarized content with the original source, thereby enabling the writer to correct it. Additionally, paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity by enabling the writer to put another author’s ideas in their own words thereby preventing plagiarism.
PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work
I intend to utilize a number of strategies to maintain the integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program and in my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The strategies that are planning to apply in both academic and professional work include; paraphrasing other authors’ ideas and acknowledging the source by citing the author, using scholarly resources as sources of ideas, and checking the quality of work using Grammarly and Turnitin tools (Adhiambo, 2019; Walden University, 2021).
