Adaptation Model of Nursing by Sister Callista Roy
Nurses who have attained their MSN degree should be able to apply different nursing theories during their practice. The Adaptation Model of Nursing by Sister Callista Roy is one of the nursing theories that can be applied (Jennings, 2017). The theory tries to explain or define the provision of nursing science. The theory suggests that individual aspects of parts act together to form a unified being. Also, people are in constant interaction with their environments (Jennings, 2017). One of Roy’s assumptions is that the integration of human and environmental meanings results in adaptation.
This theory has a significant impact on nursing management and administration. According to the theory, human systems can be individuals or groups, such as families, organizations, and the whole global community (Jennings, 2017). It also identifies the environment as conditions, or influences that interfere with human behavior and development as an adaptive system. Nursing management and administration involve solving or addressing environmental issues that interfere with the ability to help attain positive patient outcomes, which Roy terms as adaptation. The environment means inputs or stimulus that requires a person to adapt (Jennings, 2017). They can be positive or negative. In nursing administration and management, they would mean nursing staff, medical equipment, nursing skills, and other issues that would promote a person’s adaptation.
Nursing education is also impacted by the theory. Nursing students and professionals undergo intensive education and training for one major purpose, improving the health status of their patients. The theory suggests that adaptation occurs when people respond positively to environmental changes, which, in other words, could mean attaining good health (Jennings, 2017). Most of the assumptions identified in the theory form the basis of nursing education. For instance, the six steps nursing process are skills learned in nursing colleges (Jennings, 2017). Therefore, the model encourages the application of knowledge and skills acquired through nursing education.
