Evidence Rating Scales

powerpoint slides include the best available research evidence

Include in each evidence appraisal: the types of designs, samples, major findings,
and limitations and the rated evidence using the format, e, g., LOE = IIB.

The evidence appraisals are followed by an Evidence Synthesis slide which is an evidence summary of the quality (strong, moderate) and types of studies (number of systematic reviews, etc.) and includes any modifications for the change project, summary of limitations, benefits and risks of the synthesized body of evidence.

Evidence Rating Scales

Strength of Evidence (Validity) Rating Scale
Level -1 Evidence from a systematic review or meta-analysis of all relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs), or evidence-based clinical practice guidelines based on systematic reviews of RCTs
Level- II Evidence obtained from at least one well-designed RCT
Level -III Evidence obtained from well-designed controlled trials without randomization
Level- IV Evidence from well –designed case-control and cohort studies
Level- V Evidence from systematic reviews of descriptive and qualitative studies
Level- VI Evidence from a single descriptive or qualitative study
Level -VII Evidence from the opinion of authorities and/or reports of expert committees

Quality of Evidence Rating Scale*
A. High quality– evidence with consistent results, sufficient sample, adequate control, and definitive conclusions.
B. Good quality –evidence with reasonably consistent results, sufficient sample, some control, with fairly definitive results.
C. Low quality or Major Flaws  – Little evidence with inconsistent results, conclusions cannot be drawn or insufficient evidence.

* Consider entire scientific report;  all steps of the research process, must be evaluated.

Level of Evidence (LOE) Rating: Validity + Quality

e.g. LOE = IIB
