Social Health Determinants
Introduction
Traditionally, efforts to revolutionize the health status in the United States have majorly been centered upon the health care system. However, recent findings have indicated that improving health in America requires putting much focus on the healthcare system and addressing the environmental, social, and economic factors that have a significant influence on health. Health Social Determinants (SDOH) refer to the general conditions where people get to be born, live, grow, work, and even age (Samantha & Elizabeth, 2018). They are mostly made up of employment, socioeconomic status, social support networks, education, access to health care, and neighborhood. This essay addresses the social determinants of health contributing to a family/health status of seven, and it generates an action plan to incorporate health promotion strategies for this family.
SDOH that affects the family’s health status
This family of seven individuals comprises Dmitriy the father, his wife Olga, their three daughters, Anna, Alisa, and Kate, and Dmitriy’s two parents. Some of the major social determinants of health that affect this family’s health status are their physical environment and neighborhood, social integration, and community engagement. This is a family of Caucasian immigrants. Dmitriy and his wife Olga are unable to make a good balance between their work and their family. They entirely throughout the day before meeting up with the other family members later in the evening. There is no other social interaction for the family apart from the few visits they make to their other immigrant friends living in the neighborhood during weekends. This family is made up of Caucasian immigrants. They don’t have many friends they can associate with within their community apart from the few immigrant friends they visit during the weekend.
Their children do not have any other form of social interaction whatsoever with the outside world. They spend most of their time playing video games in the house. This makes them vulnerable to pain and numbness. Due to the recent resurgence in covid-19 infections, Dmitriy’s parents can no longer interact socially with other people in the local comedy club. They have ever since reported an increase in their joint pains and high blood pressure. The social determinants of health affecting the health status of this family have negatively impacted them. The grandparents have developed some health problems like joint pains and high blood pressure. Olga has developed health complications such as shortness of breath and tiredness even after performing straightforward house chores. The children have also developed numbness and exhaustion. Dmitriy is also on the verge of developing stress, fatigue, and anxiety. These factors are prevalent in this family because of their minimal social interactions with the outside world and lack of proper exercise (Samantha & Elizabeth, 2018).
Age-appropriate screening recommendations
Health screenings are necessary and recommended for people of all ages because they help determine and cure health complications. Even though health screenings are important, they vary based on age. They help in early detection, vital for treating cancers and controlling chronic illnesses such as stroke, diabetes, and heart attacks. Based on Mr. Dmitriy’s family health assessment report, the following age-appropriate screenings are recommended for each family member. Kate, Anna, and Alisa are all teens aged 17, 13, and 9, respectively. They belong to the adolescent age group of below 18 years, and this group is often perceived to be the healthiest. However, some habits formed in the teen years are likely to affect their health into adulthood. The suitable screening recommendations for this age group include high cholesterol. This is the most recommended screening for these teens, mainly because they have been engaging in minimal exercise and taking diets with high-fat amounts (Beaumont, n.d).
Mr. Dmitriy and Olga are adults aged between 40 -45. The most age-appropriate screening recommended for this age is mammograms for women, which should be conducted annually once they hit the age of 40, prostrate screening for men, which should also commence at the age of 40—a full-body scan for both genders to determine suspicious moles and skin lesions. Mr. Dmitriy and Olga should also undergo a full-body screening on their fasting blood sugar levels to check for diabetes signals. Dmitriy’s parents are aged 70 and 75. Due to their age, I would recommend an annual bone density screening for both of them. This screening begins at the age of 65. They should both also be screened for height and weight. A shrink in their height could be an indication that they would have conducted osteoporosis. Since the two also suffer from joint pains and high blood pressure, hypertension screening should be performed (US Preventive Services Task Force, 2021).
Health model
The best health model which can help with creating a plan of action in this case scenario is the holistic health model. A holistic health approach is a model which does not focus on the illness or specific parts of a patient but rather considers a whole person and their interactions with the environment (NSW Government, 2020). This model is the best to be used in this family because apart from personally focusing on the health of the whole individual, it will also enable us to focus on their environment, a social determinant of health that has actively played a role in affecting the health status of this family. By using this model, we will also be able to focus on social integration and community engagement. Using this model, we will engage five steps of family-centered health promotion. First, we will open communication with Dmitriy and his entire family. This will be made possible by developing the five strategies of communication which include respect, participation, dignity, collaboration, and information sharing. Secondly, we will recognize the importance of family. We will then focus on the organizational and family affiliation before enabling each member to aid in the treatment plan. Lastly, we will encourage them on cultural literacy (Regis College, 2021).
This paper has addressed the social determinants of health contributing to a family/health status of a family of seven and generated an action plan to incorporate health promotion strategies for this family. The holistic health model will impact creating an action plan for the recommended age-appropriate screenings for the family.
