- At what point will you report Marisa’s situation to the state? (use the state in which you plan to practice)
New Jersey State requires mandatory reporters to report any suspicions regarding different forms of abuse and neglect including exposure to violence, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. These reports should be made at the earliest stage possible to minimize the risk of harm (State of New Jersey Department of Children and Families, 2021). In the case study, I will report Marisa’s situation to the state once I am certain that Marisa and her mother have had physical altercations with each other. Since I have the family’s demographic information and address, I will prefer to first conduct a welfare check on Marisa and her family to rule out any other forms of abuse or neglect.
- If you were to report the situation, where would you report it (e.g., agency/organization)? Why?
If I were to report the situation, I would report to the agency I work for because I feel that the situation is quite complex and mandates further inquiry by assessing Marisa’s home environment and mental health. Marisa has behavioral problems that could have been caused by many factors including her father’s constant absence and her mother’s inability to regulate her behavior. Marisa’s bad behavior could also be caused by a poor relationship with her other siblings and stepfather or abuse and neglect. A social work agency would fully assess the situation from both Marisa’s and her mother’s perspectives and make correct decisions regarding Marisa’s safety at home.
