Care of the Family and Child

Please respond to the following questions below in a discussion format a reply to the teacher (DR. Mitchell):
Eva,

Can you expand further on what the United States Fair Housing Act specifically states for the LGBTQI+ patients? How does this policy make it fair or provide equal access? What does the policy actually say or entail?

The lesbians, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI+) patients are categorized as marginalized groups. The United States Fair Housing Act (FHA) was enacted to increase access to housing for disadvantaged groups by avoiding discrimination during housing allocation on the basis of gender, color, sex, disability, national origin, race, and familial status (Social Protection & Human Rights, 2018). However, it is important to note that FHA, in its original form, does not offer full protection for LGBTQI+ communities against discrimination during housing allocation. The reason is that it does not include gender identity or sexual orientation as one of the factors to be considered when allocating housing services (Social Protection & Human Rights, 2018). A new bill that was recently proposed to be an extension of FHA called the Fair and Equal Housing Act is intended to offer full protection for LGBTQI+ people from discrimination during housing (Human Rights Campaign, 2021). This bill, when passed into law, will compel both state and national governments to provide equal access to housing services for LGBTQI+ people including patients. The bill has proposed the addition of gender identity and sexual orientation as one of the characteristics considered by the FHA (Human Rights Campaign, 2021). It is anticipated that the new policy will have positive impacts on the lives of LGBTQI+ people including patients.
