Complete below for a 50 year-old married Irish-American with a BS in Business Management.
Navigate to the My Next Move website in Topic Resources and take the O*NET Interest Profiler quiz. The O*NET Interest Profiler quiz is based on Holland’s theory of career choice. Holland’s theory notes that the personality traits of an individual are consistent with career choice and career satisfaction. Write a paper (1,000-1,250 words) about your quiz results. Include the following in your paper and a heading for each requirement:
- Document the names and scores of your Holland Code (Referred to online as the Interest Profiler Results)
- Based on the results, list three different careers offered as potential matches for you (each should be at a different job zone/educational level)
- Identify the education required, potential outlook of the career, theoretical salary, and other information connected to the career
- Provide your opinion of how useful the website was, how easy it was to use, how well the site connected you to careers you would actually be interested in
- Discuss when, why, and how you may use this site when providing career counseling with clients
- Describe the difficulties that could be encountered if a chosen career did not include the characteristics of your Holland Code?
- Discuss how mental wellness impacts career choice and how career choice impacts mental wellness

Career Choice
Choosing careers can be a complex process especially in an increasingly diverse and complex job market. Careers affirm an individual’s identity and promote economic stability as well as job satisfaction and mental wellbeing hence it is important to make the right choice (Akosah-Twumasi et al., 2018). For this assignment, I completed the interest profiler quiz on O*NET Online which provided scores based on the Holland code and potential career matches. The purpose of this assignment is to present the results of the quiz and discuss the usefulness of the site in career choice and counseling.
Names and Scores of the Holland Code
The interest profiler results indicated that my score for realistic is 28, the investigative score is 27, the artistic score is 7, the social score is 24, the enterprising score is 34, and the conventional score is 40.
Careers Provided as Potential Matches
Based on my results, the first career provided as a match for me in job zone three (medium preparation) is administrative managers. For job zone four (high preparation required), the first potential career match is accountant and auditor. For job zone five (extensive preparation required), one of the potential career matches was an investment fund manager.
Information about the Careers
The main role of administrative managers is to plan, coordinate, and direct organizational activities including information management, records, and mail distribution. The main skills and knowledge required include administrative skills, management, customer service, and computer knowledge. The minimum education requirement for this career is a high school diploma. However, most employers may prefer people with bachelor’s degrees in fields such as information management, human resources, and business administration. The need for administrative services is expected to grow by approximately 9 percent by 2030. At least 29,000 job openings are available every year and most of these openings are attributed to the need to replace retired workers or those who move to other occupations. As of May 2020, the median annual salary for administrative managers was $98,890 (ONET Online, 2021a).
The main role of accountants and auditors is to examine and interpret financial records or audit and assess the financial statements prepared by others. The required skills include accounting, economics, customer service, law and government, and mathematical skills such as algebra, calculus, and geometry. Technical skills such as knowledge of accounting software, financial analysis software, and tax preparation software are also important. The minimum entry-level education requirement for most employers is a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or other degrees in similar fields. Certification in specific accounting fields including Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) enhance employment prospects. The median annual salary was approximately $73,560 in 2020. The need for auditors and accountants is expected to grow by 7 percent in 2030 and there are approximately 135,000 job openings every year. Since the main role of accountants and auditors is to prepare and manage financial records, they mainly work full time (ONET Online, 2021b).
The main role of investment fund managers is to select investments to be purchased by specific funds and to ensure that they result in maximum returns for the investors. Additionally, investment fund managers monitor the operational and financial performance of investments. The career requires one to be knowledgeable in several fields including economics, accounting, business, safety and government, and mathematics. Education requirements include bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Technology skills such as analytical software, scientific software, financial analysis software, presentation software, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software are also important. The median salary is approximately $134,180 annually, and the projected growth from 2020 to 2030 is 15 percent which is higher than the average growth for other jobs. The projected number of job openings is 64,200 annually (ONET Online, 2021c).
Opinion about the Website’s Usefulness
The website was very easy to use mainly because there were clear directions and instructions on how to navigate the interest profiler. The site was also remarkably accurate concerning the careers that would be of interest to me. I have a bachelor’s degree in business management hence my career goals are centered on business and finance. Most of the potential career options provided by the website at all job levels matched my career goals. Additionally, it was easy to extract information about different careers from the website.
When, why, and how you may use this site when providing career counseling with clients
I would use the site to provide career counseling because it focuses on personal interests rather than current skills, knowledge, and salary levels. For students who have just left high school and want to select career paths, the site would be particularly useful since it would enhance knowledge on different career paths based on their interests. Students who have just graduated with their bachelor’s degrees will also benefit from the site especially when they are seeking employment because they will access knowledge on specific jobs, availability of job openings, growth prospects, and salary levels. The site may also be useful for students who want to determine their specialty when undertaking their master’s degrees. I would advise my clients to take the quiz and make their career choices based on the potential career choices provided by the site.
The difficulties that could be encountered if a chosen career did not include the characteristics of my Holland Code
The Holland Code reflects an individual’s personality type which directly translates to the careers they are likely to enjoy and thrive in. If a chosen career does not consider the characteristics of the Holland Code, then it is unlikely that one may be interested in the career. Difficulties such as lack of job satisfaction, low motivation to work, and low productivity may
be experienced (Zainudin et al., 2020). For instance, in my case, my personality tends towards being conventional, enterprising, realistic, and investigative hence my career choice should reflect these qualities. However, if I selected an artistic career, I would neither perform well nor be motivated and satisfied with the job. I may also not be adequately skilled to perform well in an artistic career.
How mental wellness impacts career choice and how career choice impacts mental wellness
Mental wellness is associated with psychological, emotional, and social wellbeing that directly impacts how an individual act, feels and thinks. According to Kunnen (2014), mental wellness impacts how people feel about their abilities and potential hence it is important to be in an optimal mental state when making career choices. Poor mental health may result in wrong career choices.
Career choice also has a significant impact on an individual’s mental wellbeing. Career choice has a direct impact on job satisfaction. Choosing the right career results in better satisfaction which in turn boosts psychological and emotional health. On the other hand, choosing the wrong career leads to less satisfaction and lack of interest in the job which may lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Wrong career choices also increase the risk of social withdrawal, negative moods, irritability, and anger issues which have a negative impact on mental wellness (Canivet et al., 2017).
Conclusion
The ONET website provides an accurate assessment of an individual’s potential career choices based on their personality. This site would be useful to any students selecting their career path or anyone who is not satisfied with their career and intends to change it.
