Assessment

The population that will be focused on is in the broad age range of 22-35. This is considered adulthood, but not yet middle aged. Downtown is a melting pot center for employment and recruitment as well as open-air shopping malls, busy foot traffic, night clubs, bars, big-name concerts, basketball games, and big-name jewelry stores so many of these individuals will be young and not retired. The proximity of these venues allows for the use of micro mobility vehicles such as scoters, bicycles, skateboards, and roller-skates. However, this does not diminish the amount of macro-vehicle traffic such as cars, trucks, and buses in the community.

According to the website Point2Homes, downtown Miami, is composed of younger adults that are working classmen averaging to an age of 36.7. The total population is averaging to about 11,995, with predominating women by about 9% more. The employment differences are greater, with 82% of employees pertaining to white-collar, business and corporation jobs to only 18% of blue-collar jobs that are focused more on manual labor.

Illnesses or Diseases

There are no prevalent diseases or plague in the community aside from the common annual flu and the cases of Covid. The focus of this intervention will be on the plague of micro mobility vehicles occurring in this part of the city. Because of the closeness of the venues in the neighborhood, small and practical vehicles like motor scooters and bicycles are being rented, leading to traumatic accidents and vehicular homicides. According to an article Gerson and Schwartz on Miami scooter collisions, many of the injured have been causing special procedures such as skin graft, wound debridement, and free-flap procedure to rise. Many of the serious wounds that are being treated are a result of traumatic scooter collision and road rash scrapes are also commonly infected with bacteria such as pseudomonas aeruginosa. Although the clients have many healthcare options throughout downtown such as Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami, and downtown medical center, these accidents need to decrease because they may not all be fatal now, but serious health complications can come from brain injuries and infectious process from open wounds.

Community Health Nursing Diagnosis

· Risk for infection as evidenced by impaired skin integrity secondary to road rash.

· Chronic wound healing impairment due to current infectious process secondary to active pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.

· Neurologic trauma as evidenced by CT conformation of brain bleed, secondary to traumatic brain injury and decreased level of consciousness.

Strengths and Needs of this Community.

Downtown Miami has many healthcare facilities spread out evenly for citizens to seek help when necessary. It is very condensed and close in proximity; therefore, it should not take long to get emergent healthcare. There are many bike lanes available throughout downtown. Designated bike lanes are now emerging and so they are not very common. The streets are heavily congested with traffic and inconsiderate drivers. Many drivers speed and do not respect traffic laws making it dangerous for bikers, scooters, or even skateboarders on the streets to travel nearby. There is a lot of heavy foot traffic so many micro-mobility vehicle users may avoid sidewalks because they are congested with pedestrians. Both micro-mobility vehicle users and drivers need to be educated on traffic laws, the penalties for disrespecting laws need to be enforced, and more bike lanes need to be placed for enhancing a safe space.

Community Health Intervention

My intervention is to design a pamphlet to disseminate at the high schools in the Downtown area to reach those students who are currently using micro-mobility to get to school. I will also develop posters to be available at the schools to raise awareness to the importance of this issue. T

Implementation

The implementation will take place after obtaining permission from the school principals. The plan is to visit the four high schools in the Downtown area at the time of school arrival or departure. That is the time to access the students who are using this method of transportation to get to school. I will pass a small pamphlet with a few important points on following the proper rules every time they ride. Some of the rules to follow are: the use of elbow and knee pads, leaving at least 3 feet space between cars, only one person per micro-mobility vehicle (there should be no people sharing scooters, bikes, or skateboards), there will be no speeding from anyone (whether they be car-users or scooter-users), there will be more people using helmets and nightlights. There will also be an Instagram (IG) account created for this intervention and will include postings on importance of safety, the IG account will be listed on the pamphlet. The time to complete this intervention will be two days, two schools each day.

Evaluation

The evaluation of the intervention will be done by requesting the students to answer to access the Instagram account associated with Micro-vehicle safety which will be accessible in the pamphlet, posting a picture of the helmet and/or using the #SAFETYFIRST which is also located on the pamphlet. The evaluation might not be completed over the course time; however, the importance is for the students to have more information and awareness about this issue. The intervention is to raise awareness about safety. Finally, there will be less accidents reported and less fatalities.
