The concepts learned during this course adequately met the course objectives. For example, the course analyzed a group of innovations in healthcare technology, products, designs, service delivery systems, and operations. Examples of innovations covered include innovations in healthcare technology, innovative products, innovatiive designs, innovative service delivery systems, and innovative operations. The course further explored the similarities and differences between research and development-based innovation with customer-based innovations in terms of their use and effectiveness in healthcare delivery. Examples of research and development-based innovation and customer-based innovation that were discussed in detail are artificial intelligence (machine learning) and telehealth respectively.
The best way to understand one’s strengths and weaknesses in a particular area of practice is through self-assessment. The course provided an opportunity for self-assessment of personal creativity and innovation skills in addition to identifying methods to expand and enhance skills in innovation, creative problem-solving, and idea generation. According to Endsley (2010), healthcare innovations are helpful in addressing the challenges that are encountered in the healthcare industry today. Some of the assignments completed during the course addressed the strategic use of innovation in healthcare and described how to turn creative ideas into innovative nursing practices. The course also met learning objectives by allowing for the discussion and formulation of a plan for innovation in nursing or patient care delivery, particularly the barcode medication administration (BCMA) for reducing medication errors. It further explored how to prepare an implementation report for innovation in nursing or patient care delivery.
Healthcare organizations utilize evidence-based strategies to successfully apply innovation within their settings. The specific strategies that may be utilized for the application of innovation as a collaborative activity for teams of nurses and other providers in the delivery of health care to improve patient outcomes include; the development of standards that govern practice, communication, and constant employee training and development (Malone et al., 2021). These strategies are effective for successful application as well as the sustainability of innovation.
