Leader Interview
PURPOSE
Interview a current nursing leader in the healthcare organization where you complete your precepted clinical experience. You can ask any of your preceptors these interview questions and keep for reference or comparison when you do your formal leader interview.
DIRECTIONS
1. Identify an individual from nursing who holds a formal leadership position and conduct a face-to-face interview with the nurse leader. The leaders must hold a BSN or higher degree.
1. Use the questions below for your interview:
0. What knowledge, skills and attitudes are most important for your leader role and why?
0. What is your leadership style?
0. What is your leadership philosophy?
0. What are your three biggest leadership challenges?
0. How do you manage conflict?
0. What are your team building strategies?
0. What leader skills/styles/characteristics/theories/principles are important to dealing with the challenges?
0. What is your professional development plan?
0. What is your opinion on professional certifications?
0. Have you taken a leader or personality assessment (StrengthsFinder etc)? If so what were the results?
1. Develop one student generated question to ask the leader. An example might include: How does your vision compare to the vision of your organization?
1. Evaluate the answers your nurse leader provided you. Compare these answers with the answers you received from other leaders (nurse and non-nurse) as well as with your course work and best practices.
1. Include the information in a written narrative and submit.
· On title page include:
· Name and credentials of leader (may use name with permission or initials)
· Job title
· Interview date, time and location.
· Begin narrative on page 2 and include:
· Why you chose this leader to interview
· Leader’s professional background
· The leader’s leadership philosophy
· What you believe to be the leader’s greatest strengths and why
· What you believe to be the leader’s opportunities for improvement and why
· Student generated question and why you asked this question
· Compare and contrast this leader’s answers with other leaders as well as what you have learned in your coursework
