Classmate Post:

Option 2: Choose an environmental health issue or concern in our local community. Local communities can include specific towns/cities, Monroe County, or Florida. Provide an overview of the hazard, including its effect on people, the interventions that could or should take place, and the role that nurses should play in reducing or eliminating this hazard.

The weather in Monroe County can be unpredictable, We get lots of rain and storms. One environmental health issue especially in Key West is the sea level rise and flooding when these storms happen. This is a big health hazard because it can lead to contamination of the water we drink and use to cook. Toxins and untreated water waste cause disease and illness. Sea level rise increases the occurrence of molds in homes and public buildings. This then compromises the quality of air that we breathe in. Inhaling moldy air can lead to respiratory problems such as asthma attacks. Sea level rise brings mosquitoes which leads to the exposure of vector-borne diseases like West Nile virus.

Nurses can implement environmental practices that the public can follow such as recommending boiling water before use to help kill any bacteria. Nurses can play a role by educating the public on ways to protect themselves from mosquito bites. Nurses can advocate for the public, for example advocating to the county to fix any public buildings with molds. They even can start charity events to raise money for families who may not be able to fix their homes infected with molds. Public health nurses can use their voice and resources to advcate and educate the public.
