ž EHR (Electronic Health Records) implementation

ž It is now a requirement for healthcare providers to use computers in healthcare delivery…. no matter what setting they practice medicine.

ž HIT professionals must understand electronic information systems in a healthcare environment and the language of IS.

Computer-based information systems are used to help managers do their work at different levels:

ž Physicians use decision support systems to make decisions about patient care.

žManagers at healthcare facilities use management information systems to manage workflow.

žCoders use transaction systems to enter data into a database.

ž Information systems generally fall into one of several categories. Each category has a primary function:

¡ Operation support systems

¡ Enterprise wide systems

¡ Management support information systems

¡ Expert systems

¡ Knowledge management systems

ž Large IS that manages data for an entire healthcare business. Intended to solve enterprise-wide issues rather than department problems. Allows the use of consolidated data to evaluate operations.

ž An electronic health record (lots of information about a patient) can be shared across different healthcare settings.

ž Provides information to support manager’s decision making.

1. Management Information System – TPS, collects, stores,

modifies and retrieves data

2. Decision Support System – helps users make accurate

decisions

3. Executive Information System – support decision making of

senior managers

4. Expert System – built with a set of rules to solve a problem

5. Knowledge Management System – supports creation,

organization and dissemination of knowledge to providers,

employees, managers

ž System Development Life Cycle (SDLC):

2. Analysis

3. Design

ž Communication system is made up of 4 components:

1. Transmitter – sends information

2. Receiver – receives information

3. Medium – connects the transmitter to the receiver

4. Data – electronic pulses of the information transferred

ž Local Area Network (LAN)

¡ Within 1 room or a building

¡ Can be client/server network

¡ Intranet – allows companies to supply Internet services over their LAN

¡ Secured to protect company assets

ž Wide Area Network (WAN):

¡ Large areas, across a state(s)

¡ 2 or more LANs connected by telephone lines

ž Wireless

¡ Not connected by any type of cable

This week you learned about fundamentals of the electronic information system. One way to learn something is to teach that concept to someone else. For this Assignment, you will begin a two- part project here in the first unit. You will create a Microsoft PowerPoint slideshow that highlights different areas of the chapter as if you were going to be teaching this to new HIT students coming into your facility.

Focus on the information in this unit because once you get to Unit 2 you will add on to your presentation. This will be considered the presentation for session one of your HIT student training.

Please include the following topics in your presentation:

1. Basic concepts and types of information systems

2. Decision support systems

3. System development life cycle

4. Information architecture and cloud computing

5. Types of Software

6. Network Architecture

Please dedicate at least three slides to each topic. Session one of your slide show must have at least 15–20 slides. Please use the notes section to clarify anything that might be confusing and anything that needs elaboration such as definitions.

1. Discussion Board

2. Quiz

3. Assignment

Reminder…. You will need to include references in both the discussion board and assignment. At a minimum, your textbook is always a source.
