What is your Motivator?

Last week…

Let’s start with a review!

4

Week 8 Objectives

Summarize the changes in professional education based on the adoption of CQI

Explain how nursing are pivotal in the quality improvement arena

Examine how CQI has changed the practice of primary care

5

Week 8 Discussion

For last week’s discussion you were asked to respond to one of three questions.

Key Takeaways:

Performance management is an important part of quality improvement. If we are not meeting goals, achieving good outcomes, and ultimately failing to meet performance standards then quality will decline.

Outcomes are necessary to quality improvement as we need to understand our results in order to improve on them

6

Week 8 Assignment

This assignment asked that you summarize the article and comment with your thoughts

7

Quality improvement in public health is done systematically

Different states can choose to go different routes as public health is not wholly managed at the Federal level

8

Why it matters

It is important to understand how change occurs in healthcare. The United States healthcare system is often criticized for slow change, but with each state having its own politics and laws it can make it difficult to push these changes through.

We cannot improve the quality of care without looking at patient outcomes. If we do not know what our initial result is then how will we know what to improve on? The answer is simple – we can’t. The outcomes serve as a benchmark for improvement.

This week…

Examine the need for quality improvement in public health agencies.

Explore the implementation of quality improvement initiatives in public health

Investigate the shifting roles of public health and public policy in the future

10

What we will read

Chapter 6 focuses on how to improve the quality of care for inpatient service. This refers to any type of care that requires a hospital stay. You will also learn about the various domains and dimensions of quality.

Note – pay close attention to pages 118 and 119

What we will do…

Complete the weekly assignment – you are asked to prepare a 15-20 slide PowerPoint presentation discussing how your plan to improve customer satisfaction in unit 7 covers the five domains listed in the reading and create a hypothetical situation wherein a patient enters the facility and how your systems approach would play out. You would then discuss how employee experience might be enhanced by this change.

Engage in the weekly discussion – you are asked to respond to one of the three assigned questions

Complete seminar option 2 – only if you are watching the recording or did not engage in tonight’s session

BIG IDEAS

Todd’s 30,000 foot view of the material…and other random observations, thoughts, and experiences…

12

Examine the need for quality improvement in public health agencies.

Public health is constantly changing – there are new discoveries, outbreaks, and other events that might influence the public health sector

Quality improvement is necessary in public health as without it then we would be trying to address new issues with old methods – as the public’s health changes so must public health.

13

Explore the implementation of quality improvement initiatives in public health

There are a few ways that CQI can be implemented into public health:

Developing a CQI plan – this is an opportunity for public health organizations to set goals and objectives for improvement

Creating new programs based on new research. For example, the government created MyPlate in response to the need for healthier eating habits.

Identifying ways for improving outcomes

14

Investigate the shifting roles of public health and public policy in the future

One of the biggest changes we are seeing is that public health is being conducted on an international scale – this is due to the ease of travel we have today

More public health efforts and resources are being channeled into third-world countries to help reduce the rate of deadly diseases such as HIV/AIDS

The focus is really on preventative care – do what we can today to be healthy for a better future

16

Todd’s Take

There is a lot more collaboration in the healthcare field – providers can learn a lot from one another when it comes to patient outcomes

Different hospital produce different results as government regulations and standardization only guarantees a minimum level of quality – not an expected level
