Earlier detection of illnesses such as cancer in patients can successfully be treated resulting in no signs of cancer detected again. The type of treatment administered to a patient with cancer depends on how advanced the disease is and the type of cancer. Additionally, diabetes and hypertension are also managed through drugs given to patients by doctors (Prasanth et al, 2023). However, these specific illnesses can also be treated using the approach of alternative medicine and it can only be applied by doctors after careful analysis of the advantages and disadvantages to an individual.
Alternative and complementary medicine refers to using various individual practices as a substitute for Western medication. These practices include; meditation, herbal medicine, acupuncture, and special diets (Cronkleton, 2023). The safety and effectiveness of alternative and complementary medicine to treat cancer using herbal medication is a concern to some people as to whether it can interrelate with cancer medicines.
Some herbal medications administered to patients with diabetes can interact with medication prescribed by a doctor leading to safety dangers. The effectiveness of alternative medicine for patients with diabetes is one that reduces stress and helps in managing blood sugar levels, this can be achieved through the use of meditation and stress reduction methods. The use of alternative medicine like acupuncture is safe but it can pose a safety risk to blood pressure tablets (Cronkleton, 2023). Alternative practices like meditation and techniques that relax individuals to treat hypertension help in controlling stress and regulating blood pressure levels in patients.
Holistic care involves the physical, psychological, and emotional treatment of individuals. This care is associated with alternative and complementary medication. However holistic care may pose safety and effectiveness risks especially when there is an interaction with conventional medication (Prasanth et al, 2023). Allopathic care on the other hand refers to the use of Western approaches such as chemotherapy, surgery, and administration of drugs to patients with hypertension and diabetes. However, allopathic care may sometimes undermine the effectiveness of holistic care and complementary medicine.
Healthcare workers need to respect the approaches patients take to treat their illnesses. When supporting a patient who chooses holistic or allopathic medicine, healthcare workers should provide information to patients on the safety and effectiveness of treatment approaches available (Cronkleton, 2023). Healthcare workers should also have a dialogue with their patients concerning the medications to be used. Additionally, healthcare workers should respect the patient’s decisions that align with their beliefs and values and have a mutual agreement on the type of medication to be administered.
