Curriculum Time Line
The emergence of well-known early childhood curricular models and approaches is interconnected with research, developmental theories, and accumulated practical knowledge about how childrenĀ learn.

Between 1900 and the 1930s, John Dewey, Montessori, and Waldorf became influential. Between the 1930s and Post WW2, the Bank Street and Project Approaches were developed. In the time after WW2 and before the 1990s, Piaget, Vygotsky, Bronfenbrenner, and Howard Gardner became influential and the High Scope and Reggio Emilia models were developed. Between 1988 and the mid-1990s brain research began and the Tools of the Mind and Creative Curriculums were developed.

Basic Philosophy and Principles

The books Maria Montessori wrote, including The Absorbent Mind (1949) and The Montessori Method (1909), describe the philosophical and pedagogical principles of her method as well as the expected characteristics and responsibilities of teachers and children that underlie its execution. Among these are the principles of the absorbent mind; the concept of the prepared environment; and the use of child-sized, didactic materials and practical activities designed for a specific purpose.’
